Our favorite beer event of the season is here: Stout Fest 2012. During January, we're offering 24 delicious stouts on tap. We tapped our latest batch of 12 beers on Sunday, January 15th. Here’s a list of the great brews we’re offering:

To 2:00 AM CST Cactus Bar and Grill will open their private "back room" for a speakeasy-themed, prohibition party on Friday, January 20. Guests will enjoy $4 Batch 19 prohibition-style pints and $5 Templeton Rye cocktails. In the true tradition of speakeasies, Facebook fans will receive a secret password for a special freebie at 11 am via facebook.

6:00 - 11:30 p.m. • "Firkin Friday" Cask Tapping: Hofstetten Granit Bock

Join Us for Another Firkin Friday! We're tapping a different cask-conditioned artisan brew every Friday night this winter! Dispensed by gravity directly from the firkin, tapped right on the bar counter. For January 20th: Hofstetten Granit Bock, an historic style "Stone Beer" (Stein Bier). Stone beer is a unique style that comes from the Baden-Wurttenberg & Franconia regions of Germany and the Kaerten region in Austria, it dates back to the Middle Ages. The Granit Bock is brewed in large granite open troughs. Granite stones are then heated to be white hot and added to the wort. This causes the sugars in the malt to caramelize around the stones and gives the beer lovely caramel and roasted flavors. It also gives the Granit Bock a unique smoked flavor. Yeast is added after the white hot rocks have been added to the wort, allowing for an open fermentation. The Granit Bock is then matured for several months on the cool cellars under the brewery. 2 Sparrows is proud to host a Great Lakes Beer Dinner. The menu includes: House Cured Salmon, Braised Fennel, Crostini, Goat Cheese- Burning River Pale Ale. Brandade in Phyllo with Roasted Red Peppers- Dortmunder Gold Lager. Cajun Smoked Duck Etouffee- Elliot Ness Amber Lager. SmallBar will offer a special menu designed by Chef Justin White to pair with unique brews from 3 Floyds. January’s pairings: Shepherd’s pie, Swan Creek lamb, rutabaga, pearl onions and table carrots in Black Sun gravy baked under Yukon puree. Suggested paring: Black Sun Stout. Spicy buttermilk fried frog legs with over easy egg sauce and shoestring potatoes. Suggested pairing: Zombie Dust. Soft scotched egg over baked polenta, hand-made beef sausage, Roman gnocchi and Welsh rarebit. Suggested pairing: Robert the Bruce. Spicy curried goat sausage on a bun, with pulled spaghetti squash slaw, and garlic confit potatoes. Suggested pairing: Jinx Proof. 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. • Brew Ho Ho, Chicago, IL
Chef Won Kim and his crew of home brewers are ready for another installment of the only event in Chicago to highlight home brewing! TheBrew Ho Ho will feature eight home brewers, each paired with a variety of edible baked treats Featured brewers include: Brutally Honest Brewing, Powell Brewing, Big Dicks, Soma Ale Works, Corazon Brewing, Rockwell Brewing, 2nd Story Farmhouse, and New Oberpfalz Brewing. The Brew Ho Ho (known in previous years as theBrew Hey Hey and Brew Ha Ha) promises to deliver rare, one-of-a-kind beers that you can’t find anywhere else. If the beer and baked goods aren’t enough, attendees can enjoy Angel’s Envy, an artisan bourbon from Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson, that’s aged for four to six years in American white oak barrels and three to six additional months in hand-selected port casks. Come brave the chilly weather to celebrate one of America's favorite winter styles, the stout! Join CHAOS Brew Club for our 1st Annual Stout and Chili Night.
Try a wide range of fantastic Chilis made with our very own beers and vote for your favorite! The great food will be paired with club members' homebrew offerings including a Chocolate Coffee Stout, a Robust Porter, a Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout, and much more!
The occasion is to celebrate our first group brew for the barrel-aging program, a Breakfast Stout. This beer will be aged until next year's annual stout night. Come out and try the un-barreled version this year!
Take a tour of our community space and warm up with some award-winning chili, hot cocoa, and some desserts. We'll have a toasty bonfire going for the more adventurous so bring your own wieners!
Proceeds from the night will go towards building out the CHAOS community Brewhouse and future events.

The Drinking & Writing Theater at Haymarket Pub and Brewery presents Drinking & Writing Volume III, To Cure A Hangover! Steve and Sean explore possible morning-after cures in their performance about the unpleasant consequences of the bibulous life. Self-loathing prose from John Cheever and Charles Bukowski--two monumental drinker-writers at opposite ends of the socioeconomic spectrum--is intertwined with tales of the writer-performers' experiments in thwarting a hungover "poor sense of well-being" (quite unlike the "false sense of well-being" that gets an over-imbiber in trouble). Cures involve cabbage, Pedialyte, intimacy, and various combinations of chorizo and eggs; audience-participation bits are rewarded with free drinks. 5:00 p.m. • AlphaBeer VII: The Chicagoland Edition

Chicago's seen an explosion of craft breweries in the last few years, and this AlphaBeer will focus on those Windy City brews! We'll also have beers from the surrounding region so you can get a real "taste" for the fantastic breadth of Midwestern beers. Here's what we'll be tasting. Our AlphaBeerMaster is Chef Jill Houk. She's a lively, entertaining woman who loves sharing her passion for beer. She's a home brewer who's hosted beer appreciation events and gives presentations on beer, wine, and food. She's appeared on Good Morning America, the Cooking Channel, Lifetime, and NBC5, to name a few, and recently hosted 24 shows on She was also known to smuggle Bell's Two Hearted Ale from Michigan when they weren't selling it in Chicago.

Greg Browne, brewmaster at Mickey Finn's Brewery in Libertyville, guides us through the nuances of beer and its appreciation. Students study several beers and learn exactly what they're tasting and the roles that the ingredients and the brewing process have in forming those aromas and flavors. Price, $25 per person. "I've decided to clean out the employee stashes & release a few goodies from the Cellar on Sunday, January 22nd. Here's how it works: Come in the store sometime before the day of the sale. You'll draw a number out of a hat randomly, that number is your place in line in the "draft" (get it?) On the day of the sale, #1 gets first pick, #2 second pick, etc. Lots of cool stuff, beers represented are The Bruery, Goose Island, Firestone Walker, Drie Fonteinen, Jolly Pumpkin, Allagash, Brewdog, Southern Tier, De Molen, Sierra Nevada, Arcadia, JW Lees, and more."
