New events are always popping up after I've put the calendar to bed (that's newspaper talk, son). If I can, I give 'em some play.
The Encore Lounge, next to the Hotel Allegro at 171 W. Randolph St., has a "Live Like a Local" program over the summer, featuring Chicago-based an other regional brews. Being as they're also near the Cadillac Palace theatre, that draws tourists coming to see "West Side Story" who still aren't aware of the local beer scene. Beeronaut approves.
Encore's manager Andy Pishko tells me they're having a special Chicago Beer Week this very week… "which includes a firkin of Metropolitan's Krankshaft infused with coriander and orange peel. It's tapped now (Monday) and won't last past Wednesday. On Thursday we're tapping the newest beer from Finch's Beer, a doppelbock called Dirty Bird. Some reps from Finch's will be in attendance from 4 to 6 p.m. giving away samples as well." Encore's website also mentions Half Acre as being served.
We all win, I think, when a place hosting non-beer-geeks decides to open a few eyes to the local scene, especially by featuring some "gateway" beers.
