Stone Belgo Barley-Wine: ABV: 11.3% "While brewing up 2010 Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine, Stone Brewing Head Brewer Mitch Steele redirected 30 barrels of the batch into a fermenter containing the Belgian yeast we love fromStone Cali-Belgique IPA. After 8 weeks of commingling, bubbling, and resting, the results were ready for sampling. And sample we did. The English/American/Belgian chimera was so delicious, we quickly decided to make it the "Odd Beer" version of Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine for 2011."

Remember - or imagine - what beer drinking was like in America 30 years ago, before the first Samuel Smith's shipment arrived. There were about 85 breweries in the US and only one was a craft brewery. Imports were few, and almost all were pale lagers. Today, the American beer scene is the most dynamic on the planet. On February 16, we'll be joining with other great beer spots in the USA in saluting Samuel Smith, the UK brewery that helped lauched our country's beer awakening. Please join in: raise your glass, savor the benchmark beers from Samuel Smith's, and recall the role that this splendid brewery has played in the current American beer scene.

6:00 p.m. • Naughty Scot Scotch Ale tapping
Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery,
1 W. Grand Ave., Chicago (312) 755-9339
Our latest seasonal pays homage to the proud brewing traditions of Scotland. Scottish Ales tend to be a form of brown ale and vary in strength. The "Naughty" pulls in on the more assertive end of that spectrum. For the style purist, it might be described as a "120 shilling" Scottish Ale or an approachable Wee Heavy. For the beer lover, this ale is a fuller-bodied, hazel to brown in color, and malt forward in flavor, stronger ale. At just under 8% ABV, this beer will fortify the imbiber against the last of the chillier Chicago days.
