In my post last Friday (Transcending the Athletic Arena: Stricken High School Athlete Receives Warm Welcome), I relayed to you a heartbreaking story about Katie Vree; a young, healthy high school girl, and volleyball athlete, who contracted a strange virus last spring. According to the story in the Chicago Tribune, the virus attacked her spinal fluid confining her to a “motorized wheel chair.”
Stories like this don’t stay idle very long as they tend to develop a life of their own as caring individuals feel the need to help after hearing them. Thus, in a casual conversation between the DGS former head volleyball coach, Colleen Reagan, and current head coach, Trisha Kurth, regarding what happened to Katie, and the fundraiser Chicago Christian’s volleyball program hosted to raise money for her, both coaches agreed more could and should be done.
After communicating all that happened to the DGS volleyball team, and them being so moved by the story, it was decided that the girls would dedicate their game against perennial powerhouse St. Francis (Thursday, Oct. 6), along with all proceeds from different raffles and sales at the game, to Katie.
And once the coaches at St. Francis were contacted, they and their team felt no differently as all jumped right on board the fundraiser idea, committing to help out in any way they could.
The event has even started to grow beyond the confines of both teams as a good number of teachers, coaches, and other staff members at Downers South are committing to donations for the cause. I would expect support to continue to grow as Katie’s story spreads through both the Downers Grove and St. Francis school communities.
Below is the email Coach Reagan sent to notify those who might be interested in this upcoming event, along with a link to the Tribune story on Katie, giving you any further information you may need. In addition, feel free to email Ms. Reagan at email@example.com with any questions you may have.
On 10/6 the girls’ volleyball teams from DGS and St. Francis are dedicating their game to a volleyball player from Chicago Christian high school that has been diagnosed with a crazy virus that has left her paralyzed. (see attached article)
In order to raise some money for her medical costs we are going to be selling t-shirts. Both teams will be wearing them that night. We are also going to donate the proceeds from the 50/50, concession stand, $100 gift card raffle and a Mustang Sweatshirt raffle.
Shirts are $10… Checks should be made out the DGS Volleyball Boosters.
Thank you for your help supporting this cause.
Please join Downers Grove South High School on Thursday, October 6th, along with the DGS and St. Francis Volleyball teams, in helping Katie through your support of this wonderful event. Thanks!!!
