In the Fall of 2004 Downers Grove South High School soccer standout Andrew Lichaj helped his team, and head coach Jon Stapleton, come away with the coveted IHSA boys soccer State Championship. That was a good year for DGS soccer, as it was also a good year for Andrew. The kind of year that lasting memories are made of.
However, if Andrew has his way, that State Championship will only be one of many great soccer memories to come, as his current effort has put him in line with the many trying out for the MLS team, Chicago Fire. As reported today by Jack McCarthy in the Chicago Tribune piece Trial by Fire, Andrew is one of 200 optimistic soccer players making a play for the team at their recently held open tryouts.
As a current teacher (and former coach) at Downers Grove South, one who was around during that 2004 soccer championship year, it is great to see a former student athlete become a possible "diamond in the rough" for his own home MLS team.
From all of us here at DGS, best of luck Andrew. We all hope that this tryout is only the beginning for what lies ahead.
