Happy Mother's Day to Mama Rita, a Very Special Dog

Since it is Mother’s Day, I wanted to pay tribute to a famous mama pooch. This is the story of Rita, a beautiful red dog that found her way to The Anti-Cruelty Society last spring. Rita’s story is about rescue, puppies, and finding love.

Rita is a Rhodesian ridgeback mix. On March 14, 2012 Rita’s previous family brought her to The Anti-Cruelty Society stating that they could no longer care for her. She was “too much work.” The Society is an open door for animals in need and never turns away any unwanted pet.

Upon examination, it was discovered that Rita was expecting a litter of puppies. Cats and dogs must be spayed and neutered before they can be adopted from a shelter, so the Society arranged for a foster family to care for the puppies until they were big enough to be adopted.

About 10 days after arriving at The Anti-Cruelty Society, Rita gave birth to a litter of 12 puppies!

    Tatiana's Tails

Tatiana grew up with dogs, cats, hamsters, parrots, rabbits, guinea pigs, and an iguana… just to name a few pets. She began her professional career with animals in 1995 at Brookfield Zoo. Tatiana has studied wild dolphins in Australia and rescued wildlife in Florida, but she always says that people are truly at the heart of her work. The welfare of people and animals is connected through a shared environment and the same traits of empathy and compassion that make someone a good pet owner also simply make people better neighbors and citizens. If it walks, hops, or slithers, Tatiana cares about it. She currently oversees the Humane Education programs at The Anti-Cruelty Society, hosts "Chicago Tails" on Watch312.com, and is a Guest Blogger for Tails Inc.
