President Trump's United States of Awkward

You can't just do THAT. Despite your political allegiance, a system (that U.S. Constitution thing) was ratified 228 years ago to protect us from certain oppressions, tyrannies, obstruction, political swings, and underrepresentation, ensuring unalienable rights and the flexibility to fix in the light of human and cultural progress (those are called Amendments). Needless to say, that system was smacked with a 8.5 on the Richter scale last night/this evening. Earth shook, institutions (Clinton Machine for instance...) fell, and the angry voters screamed to shatter glass, just not the proverbial glass ceiling for women, which has turned to steel according to the American voter. YET, I believe in the tenets of Madison, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, and many other brilliant minds in the Age of Enlightenment and American Revolution. Meaning - you can't just do THAT, President Trump.

You can't just...

...build a wall and demand the neighboring country pay for it...

...ban an entire religious populace because you think the boogeyman is on their side...

...defeat ISIS with one hurricane of U.S. military action in the Middle East...

...deport tens of millions of human beings (let's repeat HUMAN BEINGS) from their families and lives...

...rip up trade and foreign relations deals...

...disable international political stances (i.e. climate change)...

...ignore the many minority groups (Latinos, Blacks, immigrants) concerns for righteousness and justice in our changing country...

...assume saying we need to unite in your victory speech will repair the political wounds of the worst cycle in recent memory...

...think the litigious nature of your world will go away because you have "Pardon Power" at the will of your pen...

...make everyone unsee, unhear, unwatch all the offensive, racist, horrific, and grotesque videos/clips/interviews/rallies surviving on the interwebs as a weapon against you for four years.

You can't. The system won't let you.

To The North Exodus

For all the frightened Americans fleeing to our neighbor to the north, please don't. In the face of grave opposition, our primal instinct asks "fight or flight." Now is the time to fight to ensure the things above do NOT happen.

Our Father of the Constitution, Jimmy Madison, said: "Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives."

Go beyond the headlines, platitudes, angry inciting, and nonsensical promises. Fight with knowledge. Fight with passion. Fight for all who can't fight for themselves by making sure they have a seat at the table (or a seat in Congress). Fleeing to the north only does one thing: widens the Donald Trumps of the country's margin of victory. We need you as a check and a balance for the political will of the country.

Disclaimer: I love Canada, and I'm sure it's a nice place to live :)

Parting Thought

The race is over and the sun rose this morning (just as Obama predicted! Is he a god?!). I smiled at my fellow Americans on my route to work. I didn't bellow in despair, or pout on behalf of my candidate's loss. That wouldn't be an answer for progress, but only feed regression.

Time to get back to work and allow our normal lives to creep back into existence. And the new normal is - Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the United States. A harsh reality, but a reality nonetheless.

I'm rooting hard for Donald Trump to be a competent, thoughtful, and effective president for all Americans. I want him to succeed. I want his team to look out for us all. He will be my president come January 20, 2017, and I have to be okay with that. Because I believe in the system, and the system, as the democracy it is, believes in us.
