If You've never Had A Kid Hate You, You've Never Been A Parent

The saucy film star Bette Davis told that to reporters right after her daughter published one of those scathing Hollywood mommy-dearest memoirs. Ten years older and weaker, she later added: "Aging ain't for sissies!" She went on to live a long feisty life, but perhaps she had something going for her that half of us don't: Estrogen...!

That's the so-called female hormone in contrast to the male hormone testosterone. And while each gender needs some of both, recent research suggests you gals have an edge over us guys in this department. You see, testosterone may be what gives us the muscle and mach, but on the other hand it's been found to decrease life-span and in many cases trigger prostate cancer.

So what's going on here?

Well, you have a choice. Either it's evolution doing its thing or it's the creator doing his thing. I don't want to get into that philosophical swamp, but I've been reading the latest biology reports out of Korea which have found genealogical records that prove "the palace eunuchs of the early 20th C Chosun Dynasty lived on average 14-19 years longer then men who had not been castrated.

TheAtlantic.com reports: "Male sex hormones decrease the life span of men, whereas estrogen appears to enhance longevity, thereby helping explain why women generally live longer. And are 10 times more likely to reach 100+."

Some might use data like this to explain the peculiar career choice of 22-year-old Jamie Fox in Great Britain. Currently he's working for $400 a week as a scarecrow on a farm playing an accordion to ward off partridges. Is this because he hasn't enough estrogen to accomplish more...? Or would Bette Davis be right in saying, "Just another dumb kid proving how dumb kids can be!"
