Netflix's Orange is the New Black slams the criminalization of mental illness

After months of waiting, Orange is the New Black’s (OITNB) season four was released in late June, and yes, I binged the Hell out of all 13 episodes. If you aren’t familiar with OITNB, what, pray tell, is wrong with you? the show, which boasts an amazing ensemble cast, initially revolves around Piper Chapman (played... Read more »

5 rookie mistakes I made as a kindergartner's parent

The transition to Kindergarten can be a sticky one. And by sticky I mean, “HOLY HELL, WHOSE PANTS ARE YOU WEARING?” While my kid settled in just fine after a rocky week or two, I continued to make foolish decisions all damn year long. Because I believe in paying it forward, I’ve got five tips... Read more »

Spring Break 2016: Moms Gone Wild

It’s almost April, which means we’re heading to Cocoa Beach, FL to high-five manatees and sip drinks served in coconuts. There will be boobs, however, they’re strictly dedicated to the nine-month-old joining us. LAME. via GIPHY I’ve never been much of a spring break person. I’d watch MTV’s Spring Breakers like my life depended on it... Read more »

Four documentaries that will restore your faith in humanity

While my husband and I are physically capable of sitting down and watching whathaveyou together, I tend to opt for an 8PM bedtime while he watches ESPN until his eyeballs fly out. He also hates to watch my “stories”. Hate is a strong word; my taste in television “bums him out”. Between Trump’s freakish rise... Read more »

Awkward TV: Sometimes it's Fun to Cringe

I’m definitely growing weirder as I age. Like a lot weirder. A few weeks ago a nurse asked, “how are you doing?”, to whit I responded, “I’m overbearing.” Yikes. Luckily people seem to like weirdos (at least on television), which gives me a sliver of hope. 1. Mortified Nation. My childhood diary consisted of some... Read more »

30 movies turning 30 in 2015

Goonies. Chunk and the gang are together right now in Astoria, OR doing the truffle shuffle celebrating 30 years of awesomeness. This film defined many a childhood and is quoted on the daily around here.
It’s 3:37 AM on Wednesday morning. I could blame my insomnia on anticipation of today’s arrival of FIVE houseguests; they won’t notice the “hair carpet” in the bathroom, right? Or our wedding anniversary (I FINALLY REMEMBERED!!!!) Alas, nope and nope. Instead, I think I’m just turning into an old biddy. You know what else makes... Read more »

Stream these 5 hilarious comedies while feeding your new baby

My friends Dave and Sio just popped out a fresh-baked baby. She’s sweet and sleepy and loves to eat. A lot. Sometimes I forget about the time spent pumping, nursing and bottle feeding. Or pretending to pump/nurse but really just needing a break. And then I meet a new baby and it all comes rushing back.... Read more »

Five Weird Things I Watched in the 1980s

Lately, I’ve been waxing nostalgic when it comes to television shows and movies. Mr. Swirley has endured me asking if Ellis is “too young for Goonies” (is that even possible?) no less than 12,000 times since January. All this rose-colored business got me thinking of my most favorite brain-rots from the ol’ childhood that might... Read more »

Watch These Netflix Gems Now

TLC's Extreme Cheapskates (2013). Bargh! Last weekend I spent way too long banking online so I could watch this show. I love a good deal, but good Lord do these people put me to shame. Eating of strangers plates? Washing clothes by showering in them? It's crazy awesome.
We dropped cable a few years ago because we weren’t watching enough of it to rationalize shelling out $12 million/month AND there is more than enough weird stuff on Netflix to keep us engaged for years. Here are six documentaries/series I suggest you check out if you haven’t already…or consider yourself dead to me. What... Read more »
