Are you going to bring me my lemon or do I have to squeeze it from my hat?: My Love Affair with Overboard

I used to work in a video store. It was the best job on the face of the planet. Seriously.  I got to act like a hero and zero out late fees, I miraculously found a size "small" t-shirt which is every teen girl's dream, and we watched movies non-stop.

While at Video Station, I put a lot of thought into "Annie's Picks" shelf and knew it was sub-par as compared to my colleagues' with one exception: Overboard (1987).

Is my love for this film ridiculous? Definitely. But I can't help it.  Frankly, I am surprised I haven't been served with a restraining order after all of my stalking insanity.

While I know it's cliche, my favorite character has to be Goldie's expert portrayal of Joana "Rich Bitch" Stayton aka Annie Goulahie.

Whenever I have cheese and crackers, I call upon the scene when Joanna likens  a studly Kurt Russell to an animal ... and my heart melts. Given that I am from Wisconsin,  we eat a lot of cheese.

In fact, it is the shared love for this movie, and her character in particular, which has forged friendships! OK, that is too much for even me. But I certainly have a special place in my heart for other Overboard-enthusiasts and appreciate their keen senses of humor when I,  say, bring up that dirty old hag, Mrs. Burbridge.

My best friend and I have spent countless hours reciting lines from various scenes, I try to reference the film whenever possible and and have even stumbled into Twitter conversations with strangers based solely on this 1987 hit.

So while perhaps I am diverting a big from January's Chicago Now's Blogapalooza theme in that I celebrate the entire film vs. one particular character, I have to admit I have made some instant friends through recognizing a shared-bizarre appreciation of the film that brought Kurt and Goldie together (full script here). Whether or not that is a good thing, has yet to be determined.
