The store which has the best fruit

The store which has the best fruit

I’ve been to Dominick’s, Jewel, Costco,  Caputo’s, Mariano’s and Trader Joe’s (a place I frequent and will discuss later) and more. But for my money, the store with the best fruit is Aldi.

Yes, Aldi. It’s the no-frills store with the Soviet-feel, low prices and off-brands which pretty much look and taste like the real brands (don’t know how they get away with it).

Sometimes the fruit at Aldi is  even better than the fruit at the farmers markets, which I hate to admit, because I love farmers markets and the idea of purchasing local produce directly from those who grow it.

But sometimes the truth hurts.

I just bought sweet-as-candy red grapes for—get this—79 cents a pound at Aldi. And recently, I took home some nectarines that were so juicy and full-of-flavor, eating one was practically a sexual experience. Their price? A measly 35 cents each.

I have a theory as to why Aldi’s fruit is so good.  I think it might come from the same source as the fruit that’s sold at Trader Joe’s, which consistently offers high-caliber blueberries, strawberries, peaches and nectarines.  Why do I think this? Because --this is important-- Trader Joe's and Aldi are owned by the same German company.

While I have no proof that some of the offerings at Trader Joe's and Aldi are the same, here’s an interesting fact.  Trader Joe’s sells artificial-growth-hormone-free milk for about $3 a gallon. But guess what? Aldi has artificial-growth-hormone-free milk for $2 a gallon.

Do you suppose Trader Joe's and Aldi get their milk from the same place but offer it under different names and vastly different prices?

I do.  So I get to Aldi when I can and purchase the things I suspect are the very same ones offered at Trader Joe's--but at cheaper prices. And I go when I have cash in my wallet. Aldi doesn’t take credit cards.

If I find out anything definitive about this issue, I'll fill you in, but meanwhile, what do you think? Do you think my theory is correct?
