The country is in a cupcake craze, and Chicago is definitely part of it. Some people do not understand the obsession with cupcakes and are probably wondering what's so exciting about them? Well, I pose a counter question: what's not to love? Cupcakes are portable, inexpensive and can be found in almost any flavor you can imagine. One of my favorites is Flirty Cupcakes' Curious George, a banana-chocolate cupcake with a salted caramel buttercream frosting.
In the past year, two well-established cupcake bakeries have opened locations in Chicago and started slinging their sugary treats: Sprinkles, originally from Beverly Hills, California, and recently, Crumbs Bake Shop from New York City. The cupcake fad is not only for national chains. Many established neighborhood bakers have jumped on the cupcake bandwagon as well as a crowd of relative newcomers: More Cupcakes, Molly's Cupcakes, Sweet Mandy B's, Phoebe's Cupcakes, The Cupcake Gallery and Swirlz Cupcakes. Yes, I have visited many of these yummy places on my own personal cupcake tour of Chicago, and I don't see the tour ending any time soon. By now, I hope your mouth is starting to salivate, and you are Googling to see which one of these establishments you can get to the fastest!
But the truth is Chicago loves cupcakes so much that they come to you! Flirty, with super inventive and adorably named flavors (such as McDreamy with a moist cream cheese filling) sends a van full of their goodies out to a variety of city and suburban locations. And if they come near you, I suggest you try their minis--for yourself or to share ($5.00 for 4 flavors). Check Flirty's website and Facebook page to find out their schedule of stops.
If you still aren't convinced that cupcakes are a big deal, know this: there's a television show that focuses around the cupcake on the Food Network. Yes, it's called Cupcake Wars.
Have you jumped on the cupcake bandwagon? What's your favorite place in Chicago-land area to get your cupcakes?
