Your Start Does Not Determine Your Finish: The Story Of Bernada Nicole Baker

It’s great to be able to know and partner with outstanding individuals doing great things. But I derive the most satisfaction sharing the stories of outstanding people and their contributions  to the community with a new audience.   Like the story of Bernada Nicole Baker.

It was (incorrectly) predicted that her future was limited to becoming a teenage mother, a high school drop-out, a substance abuser.  She grew up often feeling abandoned and neglected, which led to hopeless days, sleepless nights and suicidal thoughts. Watching her mother fall victim to a cocaine addiction, Baker herself formerly believed she would become just another statistic.  Far from that, she obtained two masters degrees and a Master of Divinity degree.  She has traveled extensively throughout the United States motivating individuals to eliminate excuses and maximize their potential, and has been accorded opportunities to speak internationally including, Ghana, West Africa

Because of Her personal journey led her to commit to helping young, at-risk girls in communities across the nation overcome hardships and excel academically while daring them to be extraordinary and reach their potential. In 2004, Baker founded The Princess Within Foundation (TPWF), a faith-based, non-profit self-esteem initiative dedicated to at risk minority girls aged 8 to 24 in Chicago, and nationwide. The organization’s programming provides them with exposure to different cultures, as well as rare access to academic, spiritual, financial and emotional resources designed to assist girls in their journey as they transition to womanhood. A recent quote posted by her sums it up:  “I believe in working hard and then succeeding on purpose. I believe that each of us are gifted beyond measure and we have the power to accomplish our each and every dream”.

Baker’s best-selling book, Unlock the Treasure: Discover the Princess Within doubles as the official curriculum for the program. She also recently expanded TPWF’s reach by developing and implementing programming for The King Within, which similarly works to impact at-risk minority boys. Bernada Nicole serves as “exhibit A” in my argument that how you start does not determine how you finish.  She is also a major contributor to the book “The Entrepreneur Within You” set for release later this month.
