Whether you are new in town or have been here a number of years, if you want to learn about all the great non profit organizations, social enterprises, and causes, you're probably like me. You searched your favorite current event resource (hopefully that's chicagonow.com) and went to event after event, galas, fundraisers etc. If only there were one place where you could find a gathering of charitable organizations, talk to their volunteers, get information about how you could be a part of what their doing, or event donate money. Well, I've made your mission much easier, and added a few fun twists. This Friday, at the Hotel Sax (333 North Dearborn) in the very posh 4th floor conference area from 6PM to 9PM, "Socially Aware" brings you nearly 20 non profits ready to talk to you about becoming a part of something greater.
We chose a broad range of charities, some well known, some who are still gaining ground, some national, some local. Most importantly all have great missions and some have very moving stories.
Example: Patricia Tallungan founder of the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation lost her son Nicolas after a four year battled with Neuroblastoma.,he was only 10. She founded an organization that now supports and provides information to families with children suffering from this still relatively unknown disease.
Patricia is one of the many stories you'll find at the event. Others include Dianna Long and her Urban Art Retreat organization. U.A.R. provides artists and non artists a safe place for expression without regard to any differences. U.A.R. allows people to examine how those differences impact our community and our ability to live as one.
Meet the people who make up CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Cook County training everyday people to stand up for abused and neglected children in an overwhelmed and extremely under-resourced foster care system. Without a helping hand from CASA of Cook County Advocates, these children might fall through the cracks and never be given an opportunity to find a place to call home
There are so many great stories. But there is also fun to be had! Event sponsor Conjure (the Cognac made famous by hip hop superstar Ludacris) will be providing free cocktails at the event. Appetizers and Fathom DJ will be spinning live. And one lucky guest will walk away with roundtrip air and hotel accomodations to Las Vegas for two.
The Non Profits Scheduled to Appear include: Gilda's Club, Imerman Angels, Jimmy Insulin, South Central Community Services, LUNGevity, Urban Art Retreat, Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation, Friends United For Juvenile Diabetes, ASAP (Azumah Student Assistance Program), Big Love Little Hearts, PAVE (Promoting Awareness Victim Empowerment), CASA, CAWC (Connections For Abused Women and Their Children), Urban Gateways, The Aparecio Foundation, City Of Hope, Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, Advocates For Adolescent Mothers, Girls In The Game.
Most importantly "Socially Aware" reflects my own journey to make sure my efforts to be the best person I can be. In the past year and a half I've lost 3 close friends to Breast Cancer, Diabetes and Lupus. There is no way to describe the change in the way I look at life. With each experience I host that highlights the efforts of the volunteers, the suvivors, the friends and loved ones involved with these organizations I, in a way, I honor those friends I miss dearly. Sometimes change comes with a heavy price tag.
Sponsors of "Socially Aware" Include: 220 Communications, Conjure, Charity Chat Online, Loquacious Catering, Authenticity The Game
Advance Tickets for Socially Aware are only $30 (includes drinks, food and ticket for drawing), Day of event tickets are $40
