Boston Marathon: Thoughts and a thank you

Part of my everyday life, at one time By the spring of my first year at Boston College Law School, when I was still a “1L” as they say in law school, I was finally comfortable with the “T,” I’d been to Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall more times than it’s necessary to recount, and... Read more »

Student Sues Over Bad Grade

Once upon a time at ChicagoNow, I was the legal blogger, a/k/a ‘The Bar-tender.’ I used to go to the courthouse and sift through all of the complaints filed that day.  99% of them were car accident and breach of contract cases.  YAWN. But, every once in a while, I’d hit an interesting one, like... Read more »

2012 Commencement Speakers and their good advice ...

Which, let’s face it, will probably be forgotten. At my college graduation (Lehigh University), the commencement speaker was Tom Kean, the former governor of New Jersey, and I have no recollection of a single thing he said.  Thank you anyway, Gov. Kean! At my law school graduation (Boston College Law School), the commencement speaker was... Read more »

Waiting for bar exam results? Do this!

1. You MUST get sleep. Easier said than done, I know, but at least try to get a good night's sleep. Do whatever you have to do to ensure that you're not wide awake at 3AM imagining the horror of failing when all of the other first years in your office pass. That's just sadist. Get those thoughts out of your head and have sweet dreams. Drink some warm milk. Count sheep (Do NOT contemplate a contract, a tort or a crime involving said sheep or even consider how the sheep are property of the sheep herder! Just count!). And, don't take sleeping pills. The only thing worse than being a lawyer is being a lawyer addicted to sleeping pills.
Bar exam results are forthcoming.  And, I’m reminded of this entry from the Archives. *Cue holiday music.  It’s the most horrible time of the yearrrrr!! ~~~ If you took the Illinois (or any state) bar exam in July, your results may be forthcoming very soon.  Of course, as any test taker knows, the results can’t... Notable 2011 Commencement Speakers

Notable 2011 Commencement Speakers
At my college graduation (Lehigh University), the commencement speaker was Tom Kean, the former governor of the great state of New Jersey (woot! woot!) and I have no recollection of a single thing he said. At my law school graduation (Boston College Law School), the commencement speaker was Paul Cellucci, the former governor of Massachusetts... Read more »

Nothing is certain but death and taxes

On Tax Day, I’m reminded of that semester in law school when I took both Sports Law and Tax.  By that point, I was already a CPA so Tax felt like a breeze. But Sports Law, not so much.  I wasn’t sure if a right guard played football or baseball and I’m pretty sure I... Read more »

Life After Lawyer

Graduated from the University of Chicago Law School; The Studs Terkel Program aired on 98.7 WFMT between 1952 and 1997.
I recently likened myself to the elf from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  He doesn’t want to be an elf.  He wants to be a dentist.  And, that’s OK. I’m not the only lawyer turned something else.  Here are some of the notable residents of the Island of Misfit Lawyers ~ Today, I am grateful... Read more »

Labor Day Awards: What was your worst job?

Awkward Moments Award: My first office during my first year as a lawyer was next to the partner’s office, where I would often hear the partner on the phone with the client as the client complained about me.  Where is the closest hole? I need to crawl into it. Worst Boss Ever Award: An indecipherable... Read more »
