Hero Dogs of September 11 Remembered
“Dog Heroes of September 11: A Tribute to America’s Search and Rescue Dogs” was released in 2006. Looking back and remembering, here’s  my rewind of this story: Chris Selfridge of Johnstown PA was outside working on his new home when his wife, who was 7-months pregnant at the time, called him inside to watch the... Hooray for American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards in Hollywood

I had the honor before the red carpet event and the TV show taping for the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards to interview Jim Hogan, a hearing and visually impaired U.S. Vietnam veteran. Clearly Attitucs, the Hero Dog Awards Grand Marshall provides a service to Jim, while Jim provides a service to many veterans, some older folks from Vietnam and before others are recently returning veterans. Jim and Atticus have traveled the world. His wife Pam (pictured here) told me, "I have confidence that Jim will be safe, no matter where her goes, because of Atticus." You often hear about the special bond service, assistance and Guide dogs have with their handlers. I think this picture illustrates that bond.
Images from the Red Carpet event at the Hollywood Hilton Hotel from the October 1, 2011 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. Then, behind-the-scenes photos from the ‘after party.’ I love the celebration of ordinary dogs achieving the extraordinary. The show, airing November 11 on the Hallmark Channel, will be filled with hero dogs, with... Read more »

Dog Heroes of September 11

This is Riley, who some just thought could more safely and quickly exit from the top of 'the pile' using a Stoke's basket. U.S. Navy Photo journalist, 1st class Preston Keres happened to be there and caught the moment. Today, this photograph is among the most recognizable from Ground Zero in the days following September 11.
I don’t know how you can scroll through this gallery and not get emotional. I will never forget September 11, and will be forever grateful of the emergency responders – including search and rescue dogs and their handlers. I authored a print story, 10 years after 9-11, what do the search and rescue dog handler... Read more »
