Pet Books for Mother's Day (or any other day)

"Cats: An Illustrated Miscellany," by Frederic Vitoux (Rizzoli, New York, NY, 2014; $29.95). It's 256 pages and 130 color and black-and-white illustrations of random facts, stories and art about cats. This book is delicious, equally beautiful and fascinating. Cats have been muses for many, and I learned tons of feline minutiae. My favorite chapter is Vitoux's personal ode to the cats of his own life. His previous books include "Cats in the Louvre" and "Living in Venice." Vitoux is a member of the prestigious Academic Francaise.
With Mother’s Day around the corner — and Be Kind to Animals Week is May 4-10 – books featuring pets might make great gifts! If your mother happens to be a cat lover, seeks a celebrity Internet cat, enjoys books that inspire, is a fan of the TV series “Downton Abbey,” relishes books with intrigue,... Read more »

"The Life and Love of Cats," by Lewis Blackwell (Abrams, New York, NY, 2013; $50). Astonishing, breathtaking, stunning; I can't say enough about the 100 beautiful images in this coffee table tome. Flipping through the collection, you'll understand why cats are so appealing. Along with the obligatory photos of cute kittens, there are images you've likely never seen. You'll even get up close and personal with a cat's nose and tongue. Cat lovers will pounce for this lion-sized book.

Pet Books for Holiday Gift Giving

"What's a Dog For? The Surprising History, Science, Philosophy and Politics of Man's Best Friend," by John Homans (Penguin Press, New York, NY, 2012; $25.95). Executive editor of New York Magazine, Homans' text is incredibly readable, though he offers lots of scientific facts. The connection between people and dogs may be innate in both species; Homans offers evidence that both species co-evolved. As evidence, he notes that though chimpanzees aren't as bright as dogs, canines pick up on our cues far more quickly (without training). Homans even tackles controversial topics from American Kennel Club breed standards to the plight of dogs referred to as pit bulls.
Pet lovers love to read about….pets. Of course they do! Here are seven new books, covering everything from beautiful images of puppies to a life-changing rooster to a controversial book (at least in some circles) about a less conventional approach to pet care.

Catching Up on Pet Books: A Dog's Journey to a Comphrensive Cat Book

"Codi's Journey: An Inspiring and Heartwarming Story About an Amazing Best Friend," by Jeff Maziarek (Simple Spirit Enterprises, Villa Park, IL, 2010; $15). Jeff didn't plan on this new best friend; it just seemed right, though. The lessons learned taught Jeff about himself, and served to strengthen their bond. Their relationship was intense, fun and loving, but time has a way of marching on. As age and illness began to catch up, Codi may have slowed down but continued to teach important lessons. Jeff's best friend and teacher was a dog named Codi. This memoir will resonate with anyone who's loved and lost a dog.
A lifetime journey with a dog of a life, a great training book to enhance your relationship with your pup, a cat book that has it all – and much more. Check out a half dozen recent reads:

America Loses A Great American Pet Writer

Profound, that is how I describe Mordecai Siegal’s influence as a pet writer. After suffering declining health for several years, the venerable author of 33 books just passed away. In 1970 when Morty and dog trainer Matthew Margolis teamed up for their first of 10 books together, “Good Dog, Bad Dog,” and as a result... Read more »
