Wine, Dine and Mine at Anti Cruelty Society

Nadine Wamsley, Anti Cruelty Society with a dog who has one less leg but lots of heart, Judy Baar Topinka - at this point in her career legendary for what she's done for tax payers and for pets, Dr. Robyn Barbiers, president of the Anti Cruelty Society and myself. Topinka's commitment to animal welfare transcends to how much she cares about taxpayers in all ways. Because she says what's on her mind - and I've known her for many years - I can assure you she is sincere, walking the walk to save animals.

In fact, there was an adoption that night! Donors were also offered a tasting from some of Chicago’s most talented... Read more »

Adopt A Pet Day, for Anti Cruelty Society with Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka's Critters

As emcee of this Adopt a Pet Day event, I kicked it all off talking about the importance of pet adoption. I had the honor of speaking about the Anti Cruelty Society and the special place they take in Chicago. They adopt more pets than any other facility, and they work with all reasonable shelters. They help out Animal Welfare League (where Hazel is from), and Tree House Humane, and a long list other other facilities. Though they are the City's largest and most well established facility, they may not always get the press they should. Sometimes you take your oldest friends for granted. (photo by Teresa Potasiak)
Judy Baar Topinka’s Comptroller’s Critters hosted an Adopt A Pet Day event with dogs and cats from the Anti Cruelty Society, Friday, October 28 at the James R. Thompson Plaza, State of Illinois Center.

Gov. Quinn Signs Bill To Save Shelter Pets' Lives

I had the honor of introducing Dr. Robyn Barbiers, president of the Anti Cruelty Society of Chicago. I thanked the Illinois Federation of Dog Clubs and Owners and Best Friends legislative guru Ledy Van Kavage. The Governor had mentioned that Illinois should be number one when it comes to animals protection laws. I said, "Thanks to you Gov. Quinn, and also to Ledy, we are number one!" Sen. Pamella Althoff, R-McHenry and Rep. David Reis (R-Olney) were responsible for first introducing the bipartisan bill. (photo by John Ryan Griggs)
At the Anti Cruelty Society of Chicago, I had the honor of participating in the signing of a bill which mandates that Illinois animal shelters scan all incoming pets not once but at least twice for a microchip. Here are some images from the bill signing.

Governor Quinn Saving Pets, Signing New Law to Check Twice for Microchips
Thanks to Governor Quinn, and a bill signed into law today (August 3), lost dogs and cats are more likely to be reunited with their families. The bill requires shelters to scan each pet twice and also attempt to contact owners via email and/or telephone with 24 hours of their intake. Dr. Robyn Barbiers, president... Read more »
