Dr. Natalie Marks: My Favorite Veterinarian

Dr. Natalie Marks: My Favorite Veterinarian
Veterinarians often have better connections to their clients than human patients have to their own medical doctors. I knew our 15 1/2-year old miniature Australian Shepherd Lucy was declining, but she was holding her own as I left town several years ago to speak at a veterinary conference. A day later, my wife, Robin, phoned... Read more »

When To Euthanize, Reader Question

When To Euthanize, Reader Question
Q: My 13-year-old dog passed away last month. I’m grateful I was able to be with him when he passed away at home. My buddy did have a full checkup two months before. The veterinarian had asked about any changes in the dog’s behavior. While standing in the office, it was impossible for me to... Read more »

I like ambassadors - she is Joan Embery Ambassador of the San Diego Zoo....SInce I''ll be seeing the mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Joan offered many tips. Hooray for American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards in Hollywood

I had the honor before the red carpet event and the TV show taping for the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards to interview Jim Hogan, a hearing and visually impaired U.S. Vietnam veteran. Clearly Attitucs, the Hero Dog Awards Grand Marshall provides a service to Jim, while Jim provides a service to many veterans, some older folks from Vietnam and before others are recently returning veterans. Jim and Atticus have traveled the world. His wife Pam (pictured here) told me, "I have confidence that Jim will be safe, no matter where her goes, because of Atticus." You often hear about the special bond service, assistance and Guide dogs have with their handlers. I think this picture illustrates that bond.
Images from the Red Carpet event at the Hollywood Hilton Hotel from the October 1, 2011 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards. Then, behind-the-scenes photos from the ‘after party.’ I love the celebration of ordinary dogs achieving the extraordinary. The show, airing November 11 on the Hallmark Channel, will be filled with hero dogs, with... Read more »

American Veterinary Medical Association Convention in St. Louis

I was there with Dan Kramer, then of Pfizer Animal Health when the CATalyst Council was created. The CATalyst Council met at the AVMA meeting with a meeting of our own (I am on the CATalyst Board). CATalyst is a non profit, formed to elevate the status of cats, getting more adopted and then into the veterinary offices. Dan is the past chair (as well as a founder) and Dr. Alexis Nahama of VCA is the current chair, a driving force behind CATalyst.
Here are some random shots from the American Veterinary Medical Association Convention in St. Louis, MO July 16 to 19.
