Positive Dog Training Makes a Difference

Positive Dog Training Makes a Difference
The Dog Saving Network‘s philosophy is that it takes a village – or at least lots of rescues and trainers – to save dogs, but it can be done. And using positive reinforcement training gives otherwise “problem dogs” a whole new lease on life, and newfound confidence. The Dog Saving Network and  U.S. Bones recently held a... Read more »

Saving One Dog at a Time Through Positive Reinforcement

Chris Dignan, former marine mammal trainer - now rescues and re-trains dogs, proving you can teach an old dog new tricks. He's welcoming of a large tent, supporting the idea that we can do more together - encouraging rescues and dog trainers to join in saving dogs. (photo by Louise Basgall)
The Dog Saving Network’s  goal is to save dogs, who may otherwise be euthanized for behavioral problems or simply just because. The DSN demonstrates how through positive reinforcement training and by teaching dogs tricks they become more confident, and some behavioral issues can be solved.  Another DSN goal is to work in collaboration with a team of dog trainers and... Positive Reinforcement Matters: Dog Saving Network, U.S. Bones Special Event

Positive Reinforcement Matters: Dog Saving Network, U.S. Bones Special Event
The Dog Saving Network isn’t exactly ABC, CBS or NBC – it’s an effort to save shelter dogs, sometimes helping them become them more adoptable by ‘adjusting their behavior.’   And as Chris Dignan of the Dog Saving Network has demonstrated many times over, you can teach and old dog new tricks. Through clicker training... Read more »

Bark in the Park for Anti Cruelty Society

I've helped to emcee this event for most of those 19 years....to my left Bart Shore of WBBM-radio and Roz Varon of WLS -TV have been at Bark in the Park of all those 19 years, and to the far right in the photo - he oughta look familiar, Hosea Sanders of WLS-TV, he's been a regular for about 10 years.
Bark in the Park, benefiting the Anti Cruelty Society, is a Chicago tradition, and despite weather predictions to the contrary – it was really a nice day. Thousands of dogs turn out for this event, and a who’s who from the Chicago animal world as well. If you missed it – you missed tons of fun, here... Read more »

2011 WGN Radio Petcasts

Upon returning to WGN, my first Petcast - Chicago dog trainers Wendy DeCarlo and Dennis Damon from the Dog Obedience Group. "I remember Ethel when she was so small," said Dennis as he walked into the studio. "And she still loves me." Wendy added, "But Dennis, she loves everyone."
Here are 11 of the GREAT folks I was honored to have in-studio for Steve Dale’s Pet World WGN Radio Petcasts (podcasts for Pet Lovers) in 2011.  Check them out, you can listen – it’s free…right HERE. Which was your favorite? Hard to say for me, but I do tell some behind-the-scenes anecdotes.

Foster 2 Home: Dogs Got Talent

Foster 2 Home is a wonderful organization, taking the idea of pure bred rescue a step further by providing Foster homes for mixed breed dogs. With the help of trainer Chris Dignan volunteers have learned basic training techniques, which helps to make the dogs more adoptable. Compared to even the best shelters, being in a home is naturally preferred. Also, that frees up shelter space for others. In a short time, Foster 2 Home has found forever homes for 200 dogs. So, when asked, I was happy to appear at this benefit. Besides, it was an honor to introduce Chris Dignan, who offered highlights of his "Life's Ruff" show - all with shelter dogs.
Foster 2 Home is a newer organization, based in the Chicago area, which pulls dogs from shelters all over – and places them into Foster homes. At many of these shelters, the dogs are on death row, to no fault of there own. While there isn’t the expense involved of running a brick and mortar... Read more »

Who Let the Dogs Out? Ribfest and the Dogs

They live nearby, so we met Robin's cousin Lisa and her son Elliot. Stopping by the Blackhawks 'shoot and score' area among the kids' booths, Elliot was a winner!
Ribfest Chicago was held on Lincoln Avenue in Lincoln Square, June 10 through 12. You can take your dogs lots of places, but can you think of anything better for a dog than a rib festival?
