Illinois SB0648, sponsored by public officials State Senator Andy Manar (48th district) and House sponsor Wayne Rosenthal (95th District) wouldn't have benefited animals, despite both public officials' hearts being in the right place.
Following several blog posts (by colleagues ChicagoNow.com's Kathy Mordini of Raining Cats & Dogs andDancing Dog Blogger Mary Haight) and a public outcry, I met by phone privately with Rosenthal, who agreed to table the bill.
The story behind why the sponsors thought this was a good idea in the first place is HERE, and you can hear Rosenthal and Sara Feigenholtz (12th district) - a longtime animal welfare champion - on Steve Dale's Pet World, WGN Radio, Sunday, May 26 at 6:35AM CDT at 720AM or listen HERE.. I know many of you are upset and concerned, call in yourself 312-981-7200, or text 24-720.
If the bill had passed, shelters and rescues all over Illinois would have been overwhelmed and trap-neuter-return programs of community cats would have been impacted, but it's not happening....and by bringing a coalition of experts together, I believe good can come of this.
