Rin Tin Tin Makes A Comeback on Hero Dog Awards

The Hollywood taping of the American Humane Association's Hero Dog Awards takes place on October 1.  In true Hollywood fashion, guests walking down the red carpet include Betty White, Whoopi Goldberg, Jillian Michaels, Kristin Chenoweth. Victoria Stilwell from Animal Planet will be there, as will other 'pet people,' and I'm honored to be the announcer.  The emcee for the evening, Carson Kressley.

However, the real stars are the hero dogs, and the people who's lives these extraordinary dogs have saved.

Representing a long line of Hero Dogs, Rin Tin Tin, who Susan Orlean has entire book about, called Rin Tin Tin: the Life and the Legend.  In part because of American Humane Association's Hero Dog Awards and also the capture of Osama Bin Laden, which a dog was involved in, there's been a renewed interest in military working dogs.

CBS This Morning did a story about Rin Tin Tin, an early TV star (had his own TV show The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin in 1954, not mention star of many movies back in the day). Funny, the CBS story compared the rivalry between Rin Tin Tin and Lassie, like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Im thinking Rin Tin Tin is the Stones, and Lassie the Beatles. Check out the images of Rin Tin Tin through the years.

The U.S. military is beginning to increasingly understand why and how military dogs save lives, paying greater attention to emotional needs of the dogs and their handlers.

The Hero Dog Awards airs on the Hallmark Channel, November 11.
