Dog Fighting App Returns, Please Bark Back to the Android Marketplace

Dog Fighting App Returns, Please Bark Back to the Android Marketplace

Dog fighting is a felony in all states, and for good reason. Once again the Android market and Google have offered the opportunity for people to virtually practice fighting dogs.  How can exposing children to the horrific and gratuitous violence of fighting dogs be a good thing?

This is not just another video game. According to Fox News, the developer, Kage Games, LLC calls this "the biggest yet," referring to a previous dogfighting app, which was forcibly removed from the market in April.  I was among the first bloggers to write about the app online, wrote a piece in my newspaper column and talked about it on the radio -  calling the app "reckless and irresponsible."

Bloggers and traditional media picked up on the story...National animal welfare groups, police superintendents and even Michael Vick spoke out against the app. (Wish Michael Vick would do more to speak out against dog fighting, but that is another story.)

With overwhelming public pressure, the app went away.

Now, it's back - called KG Dogfighting.

To verify it's availability, not only did I visit the Android market place online, I also checked on my Android phone. Indeed, it's there...

The new app offers "advanced dog training levels;" more items to train dogs with, including an array of whips; allowing users to buy and use a variety of drugs; and new guns for trainers to use in shootouts with “F.E.T.A.” -- a fictional law enforcement agency.

If you really want to be sickened - just read the description - which I cut 'n pasted. I agree with their defensive contention about censorship, it is indeed a slippery slope. Having said that, at some point you're going too far. Besides, not every magazine publishes every story I write. The Android market (according to their own rules) could remove the game (I really should not call this a game), and they should remove it.

"Feed, water, train and FIGHT your virtual dog against other players... action games, chatroom, many characters and dogs to choose from, virtual store, more

Drop your cred codes and ideas in the comments section or message boards on the web. Check the shoutbox in the game for news and game updates, or just talk fight and smack with other players.

1. It is just A VIDEO GAME
2. Perhaps one day we will make gerbil wars or betta fish wars for people who can't understand fantasy role play games
3. Just because something is illegal in real life in certain countries, does not mean it is illegal to make a song, movie, or video game about it
4. Just go slingshot some virtual birds to kill some virtual pigs.
5. Go complain to someone who cares about Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Weed Farmer, Smoke a Bowl (these two are listed in the top 15 of casual games on Android Market) and maybe even Sierra's Leisure Suit Larry from 1987.
6. This is listed as a HIGH MATURITY app, and does NOT violate the Terms of Use with the Google market in any way!!!

Let's Get it On!

We appreciate everyone's thoughts about our app as we are firm believers in the right to free speech and the free exchange of ideas.

These freedoms are the building blocks of the Google Android operating system and the very reason so many users choose Google Android over the alternative.

We've heard thoughts from many dog and animal lovers about our app and first we, as dog owners and dog lovers ourselves, would like to thank you for your thoughts and for the work many of you do on behalf of our canine friends. We DO NOT CONDONE violence towards animals or humans, and we are confident in humankind's ability to distinguish between a rudimentary game and the consequences of real life.

We are confident this game will be a net benefit to dogs as it has been in our operating agreement from the start of this project that a portion of the proceeds go to animal rescue organizations. Further, this is a satire about the ridiculousness of dogfighting and we believe in the power of a modern media tool to educate and raise awareness of the real horrors. Another portion of our proceeds are also being appropriated for catastrophic human tragedies, the first of which is the Japan Tsunami relief effort. We encourage everyone to donate to BOTH of these very important causes.

There are hundreds of games on the Google Android market as well as any other popular game platform which, if acted out in real life, would be illegal. What makes the Google Android platform special is it gives the freedom and responsibility to the individual users to decide what to put on their phones as opposed to the phone carriers and app stores making value judgments on our behalf.

Lastly, we are incorporating suggestions from both our supporters and our detractors in an effort to create a more socially conscious app that provides a net benefit to dogs as well as humans. Please remember that censorship is a very slippery slope."

When the game was free, I did download to see what it was all about - but I don't want to give the company the download credit....and I certainly don't want to give them the $4.99 it now costs. Their description of 'educate' might be right, and that's the problem...who wants to educate people on fighting dogs? Can't speak for this newer game for sure, but their old game was not "satire about the ridiculousness of dogfighting" as suggested. It was violent, and it seems this is more so - and they are proud of that. Besides, dog fighting - more than ridiculous - it's unspeakably horrific, and young people exposed to this violence are desensitized to violence to people. And at dog fights, according to law enforcement, there are always other crimes happening. Never mind those dogs that are truly victims.

I hope you share this post, and encourage people to complain to the Android marketplace. Complaints are reserved for inappropriate apps - this sure is!  You can also flag on your phone in the Android market as inappropriate. (thanks to Facebooks fans who notified me the app is back).  Please take action - together, again, we can get this app removed.

  • The app never went away - it went down earlier this year because of a copyright issue, but came back up right away with the new name. What saddens me is that this game has been up all this time, and everyone that was fighting the game pretty much just gave up. The game has been around all this time. If we want this game gone, we need to KEEP FIGHTING IT, and not give up because things aren't happening fast enough.

  • I have not given up - and agree we need to keep fighting it...I think people don't please share this wide and far. Some people don't react or respond - but some will....thank you for your comment.

  • I will definitely pass this around.

Why the hell would someone call this a "fantasy" game? There's nothing fantasy about it? If it were called Unicorn Wars, then ya, I'd see why the idiots who made this game would call it a "fantasy" game. I've already sent this message to everyone I know. Hopefully they pass it on. Hmm, wonder if Michael Vick has played this game (secretly of course since he's working for the ASPCA against dog fighting)?

  • And btw, it's called K G Dogfighting - not K C. There's a twitter against it at!/NOKGDogFighting

  • typo - thanks....

and yes - please do share....

The creators of this app are making the assumption that the general public is intelligent. Have they ever spoken to anyone who raises dogs for dog fighting purposes? I have. These people have the IQs of turnips (and this is an insult to turnips.) This type of app encourages real dog-fighting, just as studies show that violent video games and television encourages the same behavior among impressionable children.

  • fb_avatar

Here is what I sent. I hope any personal injury attorneys get ready to attack. You now have a new source of cash from the people who own fighting dogs and happen to have this app. Good luck!

"Once you have read this complaint, I recommend you check with your attorneys to verify that I may be right. I am a high school special education teacher with my master's in curriculum and instruction. This app is endangering human children, since studies show they are the most likely to be the victims of dogs raised for fighting purposes. This type of app encourages real dog-fighting among the less-educated parts of society, just as studies show that violent video games and television encourages the same behavior among impressionable children. Although there is the right to free speech, the lack of regard for the safety of our children as well as the animals involved in the sport is disgusting. Shame on any person or company that is profiting from something that will cause future children to be maimed or killed. I see great potential for lawsuits against any companies involved in allowing an app that leads to the death of an innocent human child and I will do my best to spread the word among personal injury attorneys representing the families of children maimed or killed by the dogs of owners who use this application, especially since many of these people are not responsible and do not have the money to pay to provide restitution. These will be interesting court cases to watch."

  • I may hear from attorney's defending turnips.

I greatly agree with you Rosemary...being on the Board of Directors and a national ambassador for the American Humane Association, I am well aware of the link between violence to animals and then violence to people.

While there is a right to free speech - as you suggest, there are lines drawn for public safety. Also, Google (a private company) can simply abide by their own rules...If an app is graphically violent, hateful, abusive, offer improper content may be eliminated.

I'm not lawyer (happily) but this isn't actually a free speech issue. Google grants more "freedom" than Apple, in that they don't OK apps in advance...but there are still rules.

Thank you for sharing your views so articulately....and here's hoping others share this post.

  • I'm an Android phone user, a child/family psychologist, and a certified dog behavior consultant. There is a significant amount of research that interaction with such games can create both the impression that dog fighting is acceptable, and it can also relate to children and teens copying this behavior in their real life "play" to see what it really feels like. While parental supervision might be called for, we know that doesn't always happen or that kids find ways to play such games anyway. This has so much potential to be damaging for both children and dogs that it absolutely needs to be off the marketplace. As a customer, I look to support businesses that actually consider the consequences of their decisions. I work with lots of children/teens who have injured animals - we don't need Apps out there that celebrate doing this! Droid--Please remove this APP immediately!

I am absolutely furious and disgusted that this app is available, with the huge problem this country has with animal cruelty there's now an app for your phone so all these young kids can learn exactly how to raise and fight dogs to earn money..UNBELIEVABLY SICK!! As a million dollar company I don't think its appropriate or even humane to allow something like this to be available on your market and It should be removed IMMEDIATELY!!!

  • To RJ 14's point, being on the Board of the American Humane Association, I know you are right. We discovered what is referred to as the Link, now accepted by law enforcement.

Unbelievably sick - is right Erin...For both you and others, hope you share this.
I have not given up - hope you feel the same.

  • Keep it up!! You have done the nice job having provided the latest information.

Studies have shown that violent videogames improve learning and other important skills in childs and in adults of all age.

Studies have shown that homicides and rape crimes have been dropped and we actually are in a historical lowest for these crime, since the Doom videogame come out.
The stigma and ignorance toward violent/videogames is gross, and show your lack of confidence with technology, leading psychologists who can do a simple math calculation to a witch hunt against poor childs and patient who plays videogames, labelinng as potentially disturbed, socially awkard or dangerous.

This show all of their technological awkardness and ignorance toward new enterteinment content.

Videogames have nothing less in term of quality content storyline and fun, tna a book. a theatre show, a movie.

Of course, comparing videogames to books, there is the engineering book(think about flight simulation) or the love novel, or the trash book like 50 degrees of gray .

Funny how televion propine trash content to ignorant adults like 8 pm o 'clock shows, and i'm pretty dang sure these psychologist must think that these are quality contents, other wise would not be possible to justify theyr bullshit level.

that been said i think some people needs psychologists and they do help people with eating disorder, panik attach, depression etc, but they don't know shit about technologic contents, this ignorance does not apply only to psychologist but more to society, that is explained by the success of Iphone and Imac, has they are seen as more user friendly interfaces. Funny how in 2004 these psychologist and people sweared they would never used a cellphone or a personal computer at all, calling it alienating.

Stupid to cite that mass murders or spree killers use videogames, because if so, there should be a lot more, while it isn't so, given that more than 1 billion people all over the world play videogames with violence.

That being said, as a avid simmer and gamer i noticed that this game disturbed me somewhat, even tho i play shooter game and shoot people on a daily basis like everyone else. So this lead me to think i should be doing some humanization kind of stuff, justifying the killing of a human player but not the killing of a dog. and that's bullshit, that's why a videogame will always be a videogame, as there are books and movies showing dog fights, movies of war historical WW2 movies like "Save soldier Ryan" and "Schinldler list" are praised all over the world.
These movies shows just how morbid human being can be, loving to see these soldier being blowed up in the sands and calling this an action movie.

Blaming videogames like you people do, is like judgin save private ryan just for the violent scene, and not for the proud sense of love and compassion the whole movie is about. AND THAT'S BULLSHIT. And young people want to imitate theyr grandpa, it's called empathy, a WW2 videogames is nothing less than a history book, for teens of course. Adults plays Arma 3. :)

So fuck your bullshit, if this app cost less than 3 dollar i'm gonna buy it right now.

If you anti-videogame activists want to do some real good in the world, GO FIGHTING AGAINST THE REAL MAFIA OF DOGFIGHTS, the one that's real you know, instead, you are following a Chimera, a ugly and dagerous monster, like this videogame about dog. But yu know what?Chimera aren't real.

So man up and go t o your local police station young girls, and start reporting of real dogfights, the one that russians and gangsters do.

But you what what? you won't do it because YOUR COURAGE TO STAND UP AGAINST A VIDEOGAME is a chimera too.

White knights of virtual moral. VIRTUAL. not real.

    Grow the fuck up.

  • fb_avatar

And last thing, you know why violence in videogames is a hot argument?

Because videogames can't bee too realistic. Because if they wuld show the real horror of war, public opinion will raise against Authority, new hyppie everywhere like in the 1960 against vietnam.

War can't be showed as real as it is.

This game do nothing more than showing the sad truth of dogfights, and the real commitment of you should be to stand up against the real dogfights.

No, instead you choose the easy way. Better light up on fire this cathartic videogames, like a straw bed, while the real enemy is still out there, laughing at your idiocy.
