PeTA Stunts, Campaigns and Posters: A Joke of Itself?

How ethical are People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals? Decide for yourself. I did when years ago, after writing about flea control I received an email from a PeTA supporter saying, 'I dare you write about killing fleas!' How effective are the PeTA approaches, and what you think of their messages? I think they're becoming a parody of themselves. . . the most recent exploitative example of 'do anything to get attention' (I am guilty of giving them that here) with ex-Chicagoan, supermodel Joanna Krupa's ad.

Weird and fun stuff from all over:

  • Do you think anyone even notices the dogs? And not just because there's a naked woman there! Shock tactics don't make change, so why do they bother with this? People completely forget the animals and their needs and walk away embarrassed.

  • There's a reason the "e" in PeTA isn't capitalized. All they care about is generating more donations for themselves, just like HSUS. Half their actor "spokespeople" don't understand what they stand for - they are loving pet owners who have no idea PeTA considers owning a pet to be "slavery." Does anyone even pay attention to them any more?

BTW I would think the Church might have something to say about this offensive claptrap, as well...

  • Until people see PeTA, HSUS and many more animal radical groups as a threat to their ownership of their animals they will continue to donate to these frauds. PeTA will use these sleazy tactics to get attention, any attention to further their cause that no one should be able to own a pet for their own enjoyment. The quotes regarding this intent are out there for all to see. The same statements suggesting we should not own animals come from HSUS, one just has to look for them. For information on HSUS go to activistcash.com and in the right hand corner click and scroll down to 'humane society of the united states' and read all the information regarding their income, what they do, and who they have as supporters. This is a very very scary bunch of people and until the public wakes up we are in danger of loosing our 14th amendment rights, that of owning our property.

  • The shame part is, I think it is a beautiful piece of artwork, wasted on PeTA propaganda. The irony is, there are some dogs in that poster that appear to be purebred. While there are purebred rescues for all of the more popular breeds, where do you think those dogs originate from? Could it be breeders? You can't argue with a PeTAphile because they're so snowed by the seeming righteousness of what they're doing. But maybe someday we can at least get PeTA's tax-exempt status revoked. I can't carry a bottle of water into an airport, but they can send money to help domestic terrorists who bomb labs and things like that. Tell me now, in our war on terrorism, why do we allow groups like PeTA to form and exist?

  • As both a woman and a catholic I find the Peta posters to be highly offensive! The degredation of women is not an acceptable format in todays society.
How can an organization that degrades women, slaughters 95% of the animals they 'rescue' and currupts a christian symbol be permitted to continue. It's time for the public to be educated about the scam that is Peta.

  • Peta has gone well beyond the HSUS; they are also infiltrating the American Vet Medical Association and their supporters are making their way even into the Canadian Vet Association. They want to ensure that the public does not have freedom of choice when it comes to pets. Their agenda is anti-pet period and they are using the very people who love animals to attain the muti-million dollar proceeds they receive to stop pet ownership. They started inconspicuously, making people believe they are trying to help animals, but ultimately their adgenda is anit-meat, anti-fur, & anti- pet ownership, and they will use any dishonest means to hood wink the public as to their real agenda.

  • I agree that this is a good work of art gone bad. But we need to have some venue where the public can get information. Twenty years ago I thought PeTA was great (no fur). A few years later I distanced myself from them really fast, mainly for their tactics. Didn't even truly know their ideology then. And I was not aware of the HSUS connection until a few years ago. Although my sister says "everyone" has known that for years, that's not true. I consider myself fairly well informed, and I didn't know, and she never thought to mention it to me. OK, we don't talk that much, but this is important. There should be a centralized iformation booth! Oh Steve, what are we going to do? (hint, hint)

  • I too used to support peta, but no more. Their anti-animal stance is blatant. This latest attempt for attention is disgusting to say the least. They along with hsus should be exposed for the frauds they are. All my animals have been strays, but I certainly wouldn't condemn anyone who chooses to buy a purebreed. That is still the American way and no organization should be allowed to thwart that freedom.

  • I love the picture and I think the message is GREAT!
I no longer support PeTA because of their stance on Bully breeds, however, I do think they have done a ton of amazing work on behalf of the animals and that is far more than I can say for all the breeders posting on here right now. Don't buy a dog, especially from a pet store. They are all from puppymills. Reputable breeders (of which there aren't many these days) do not sell their dogs to pet stores because they have a list of people waiting to get their dogs. They don't sell out to the pet stores for $75, which is what the pet stores generally pay. Then they cram the 'consumer' $1500+ for their inbred, sickly little fluff ball. Do yourselves a favor and get a dog from a rescue. You can get any breed if you look hard enough, even the little designer ones. You can get pups, adults, purebreds, etc and they are spayed/neutered, have their shots, etc., unlike when you buy from a pet store. You pay tons of money for the dog, it's usually sickly so that costs more, then you still have to pay for altering, shots, and so on. ADOPT!!!

  • I am just going to leave a short note answering

  • Are you having a contest to see who can cram the most typos into a simple photo caption? You wanna know who is insulting the intelligence of the news-reading public? It isn't PETA so much as the dying corporate media in Chicago. Suggestion: hire an experienced proofreader.

  • Regarding the use of the Christian cross: Naturally, the Jewish Star of David (and other religious symbols, probably) could also easily be positioned to cover the model's naughty bits, but do you ever think that would happen?

    Nah, didn't think so.

  • Of course it's about gettng attention. It works. I bet more than half the folks who look at the add READ the ad in addition to noticing how gorgeous this woman is... So, yes, it is about getting attention and it works.

IMHO, it is immoral and unethical to breed dogs knowing that there is a terrific pet overpopulation issue in our country and abroad. Until the day our animal shelters are managing without financial and other worry, people should stop breeding their pets. Period.

Some breeders (dog and cat) have the nerve to post on grocery store bulletin boards that they have puppies or kittens for sale for $400+... They're ads are posted right over the local animal shelter's announcements about special adoption events, including ones that waive the adoption fee because of overpopulation at a particular shelter. Breeders have money on their mind, first and foremost. That is sickening, with or without the current pet overpopulation crisis. Breeders treat their pets like money making machines, first and foremost.

  • Not enough money to pay for proofreaders, huh? Rough.

  • They said "I dare you write about killing fleas"??? That makes no sense! Shouldn't it be "How dare you"??? Doesn't anyone read what they post before they post it?

  • Well, one thing you can say about the folks at PETA, they know how to attract attention.

  • Just to comment on a couple of things that 'justsayin' mentioned.

People that post on food store bulletin boards are not Code of Ethics Breed Club members. The breed clubs I am talking about are sanctioned by the AKC, and the people in the clubs that do breed their animals have rules to follow.

One rule in one breed club I know of is that

  • So, you're saying that advertising makes someone an irresponsible breeder? Perhaps you're a bit beyond reason's reach on this one. It is a bad idea to make broad statements about any person or group - and if a breeder does not advertise, tell me, how exactly will anyone know they have dogs or cats available? Just like HSUS has demonized "internet selling" - when every other business in the world is EXPECTED to have a website - you have fallen for the trap. Advertising does NOT equal mill.

Another poster needs to read Winograd's book and learn that overpopulation isn't what it's made out to be by HSUS and PETA - who *count* on the myth of thousands of purebreds languishing in shelters to keep the donations flowing.
