National Coffee Day

National Coffee Day

Today is National Coffee Day! I myself am a devoted Keurig drinker since we have one in our office. My favorite combination is one Green Mountain Vanilla and one Green Mountain hazelnut decaf combined into an extra large mug. It tastes just like Einstein's vanilla-hazelnut blend!

The folks from Dunkin Donuts, another one of my favorite brands (love their coconut flavor) supplied me with some fun coffee facts for today! They'll be offering a pound of coffee for $5.99 on 9/29 and 9/30 at participating Dunkin' Donuts!

Cool Coffee Facts:

  • Coffee beans are not beans, but the pits of a fruit that resemble cherries
  • Approximately 2,000 berries are needed to make one pound of coffee
  • When roasted, a coffee bean doubles in size, and the caramelization of the sugar turns its color from green to brown
  • The longer coffee is roasted, the more caffeine burns off during the process; therefore dark roasted coffees actually have less caffeine than medium roasts (my favorite fact!)
  • Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. to produce coffee
  • 49% of the American adult population (age 18+) drink some type of coffee beverage on a daily basis, averaging about 3.4 cups per day
  • Coffee is the second most valuable traded commodity, second only to oil
