The Mom Test

Mom.jpg

Not actually my mom

After the jump is an email my mom sent to me following the Penn State loss. (I added emphasis to a few key sentences.)

The
NU-Penn State game sure was unbelievable.  I missed most of the first half
because I was out doing errands.  Came into the house, switched on the TV,
saw some of the game, and then the 3rd touchdown.  I was ecstatic and very
happy for you.  Sang the fight song to Freckles' picture.  Went to
the kitchen and fixed myself some lunch during halftime.

Then
I settled in for the 2nd half.  It was almost like Northwestern started
losing because now I was watching the game!  I went back into the kitchen
and just listened for awhile in case that would help, but it didn't.

Well,
at least you experienced history.  What an amazing record for Joe Paterno,
and you were there for it.  The ESPN2 guys were saying that probably no
college coach will win 400 games ever again, since they move around so
much now.

They
told a sweet story about him and his wife.  If I heard it correctly, he
was a 32-year-old assistant coach when he met his wife studying in the
library.  She was an 18-year-old freshman.  They waited until she
graduated, and then got married.  They had 5 kids, despite his late start!

I
don't know anything about football, but it looks like our opponents are
adjusting to our play, but we're not adjusting to theirs.  Surely they can
remedy that.

If
we feel bad, think about Coach Fitz and the team.

Guess
you heard about Michigan narrowly beating Ill-Annoy in a game with astronomical
points.

Well,
good night, sweetie.  The Wildcats will rise again....someday....because now
they have a great coach.  I am thrilled that you were at Northwestern
during the birth of the Coach Fitz years.  That is really something
special, even on this day of a yucky loss.

Love,

Mom

We can take away a couple things from this email.

Apparently, Joe-Pa once hit on an 18-year old co-ed when he was 32...my mom finds it cute because they got married...I find it creepy.

But more importantly, even my mom who struggles with the concept of the "first down" can tell NU's coaching staff has not been up to the task this year.

Figure it out guys.
