My cousin is getting married this weekend. I am always amazed by two people taking that leap of faith in each other. In all honesty I haven't been to a wedding in awhile.
I would hope the music has improved from the last one I was at. At a wedding you are working a tough crowd of many different musical tastes and age range.
It reminds me of that part in the movie Love Actually where they are at the wedding party and the DJ's fate lies in the next song. He pulls out "Puppy Love" and they agree, "worst DJ in the world." Movies are a reference point since music and movies go together so well and music is often used in movies to capture the feelings of love between characters. Nick Drake, Van Morrison and Ray Charles are good examples.
It's always a fine line of conveying in a mix that deep feeling of love without putting on more cheese than the cheese fries at The Wiener's Circle.
There are different points in the wedding party when you need a slow dance, or a booty shaker, or maybe a strong song that transitions from the slow to the boogie. Considering the generations involved you want strong classics and new music that doesn't offend. Is Nick Drake sweet or sad?
Have you been blown away by a wedding song recently? Any songs that you wish were played at the wedding party you were at? Any songs on your iPod that you think would fit the celebration of love? Post your ideas in the comments section.
Here is a couple thoughts I'm working with...
I really like the vibe of Finley Quaye's Maverick A Strike album. It is not current but I am currently listening to it. There are several songs about the power of love. I like the song "Your love gets sweeter" as a transition song. For an instruction booklet for what to do on your wedding night their is "Turn off the lights" by Teddy Pendergrass. Frank Sinatra for class. The Black Keys? Please comment with your additions to this playlist
