We are getting close to the top. Today we are at #2 on the countdown of the Top 10 performances from the David Letterman show.  The importance of Joe Strummer on my life can not be overstated.  The Clash are my favorite band of all time. They were inspired by all the right bands.  They have inspired all the right bands that have followed them.  Joe Strummer's solo work is just as important as the Clash catalog.

They are kind of a "BIG DEAL" around here at Spool Going Round.

I have read just about every book written on The Clash.  I have watched just about every DVD tribute to The Clash and Joe Strummer.  Have you watched the Let's Rock Again movie? I learned so much about life from that movie. Joe Strummer has to go back on the road after being away from music for a long time.  He has to talk to DJs who are not familiar with the name "Joe Strummer."  He goes door to door trying to get anyone and everyone to listen to his new music.  He mentions in the movie that in his life he has experienced the full spectrum from hero to zero. I love this saying and I also feel it is important to experience the full spectrum in your life.

The perfect movie about Joe in my mind has yet to be made. I am still waiting for the Joe Strummer movie about his life played out with an actor portraying my idol. This actor would be Chicago's very own John Cusack. He was made to play this Oscar worthy role. This performance from the Letterman show is over way too fast and so was Joe's life. The punk rock warlord was another man who did not go to the doctor for check ups and died too young.

Until the movie, we have this live performance coming in at #3 it is Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros playing "Johnny Appleseed"

  • Hi ~

Really enjoyed your post and a wonderful performance by Joe. I'd have it at number one though!

Funny enough I've been writing about The Clash/Gorillaz and Letterman a bit lately so I'll include this on my blog.

    All the best

  • Hi Tim,
Thanks so much for the note. I will be checking out your blog tomorrow. I feel so much of that same love you have for The Clash and its members. They will always be my all time favorite. I was going back and forth with the top 3 on my Letterman countdown and Joe was at #1 several times.
