Many of us minimize the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. However, many nutritionists agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In an effort to live a healthy lifestyle we should recognize the benefits of eating breakfast. Eating breakfast provides energy for the start of the day and helps to improve performance. It also helps with weight control. There are studies that show breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism, which in turn helps you burn more calories throughout the day. Ideally, you should eat breakfast within an hour of waking. This reduces the likelihood of overeating later in the day.
In a perfect world you would be able to sit and enjoy breakfast being mindful of the meal. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world. We wakeup aware of our responsibilities for the day and we often hit the ground running unable to take time to enjoy breakfast. We may be tempted to grab something quick like a donut, muffin, or pastry. These items are not healthy. If you must have a dessert you should probably save it for dinner. A healthy breakfast should include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low- or non-fat dairy, and lean protein.
If you are typically in a rush in the morning there are options you can consider for having a healthy and quick breakfast. One option is to prepare your breakfast the night before and just warm it up in the morning. You can make a quick omelet and add some spinach for a healthy breakfast. Boiled eggs are quick and easy. Walnuts are considered healthy. You can eat them with fruit, dairy, or even vegetables. In the past when I knew I was going to have a busy week, I went to Target and purchased some Good Food Made Simple breakfast burritos and I would eat them with an orange.
If there are healthy foods that you enjoy but you usually eat later in the day feel free to eat these foods for breakfast. If baked fish with vegetables is your favorite meal have it for breakfast. If you do not like what is typically considered breakfast foods expand your horizon and eat what you like for breakfast. Just make sure there is some nutritional value to the food you eat. I know you may like chocolate cake; however I am not recommending eating that for breakfast.
