In an expected but still shocking move, the White Sox have sent their longest tenured player John Danks packing as they have designated him for assignment and he declined a minor league assignment. This means the Sox will eat the remainder of his $14.2 million salary.

Despite his 0-4 record, 7.25 ERA and 1.746 WHIP, Danks has been his biggest critic. Danks used to be a pitcher that could be a great No. 2 on quality staff, but then his shoulder injury robbed him of all of his velocity.

To watch his decline has been a sad one.

Miguel Gonzalez already got his audition against the Blue Jays and performed poorly. Erik Johnson is starting Thursday. Jacob Turner has had some impressive starts down in AAA. Despite this, another right handed starter may be soon tossing his hat into the ring.

Lincecum would assuredly be a reclamation project like a more extreme version of Mat Latos, but if Cooper could work his magic, it would make the battle for the fifth spot a heated competition.

In the meantime, let's look back at Danks' best performance in pinstripes, the 2008 play-in game during his stellar sophomore campaign.

  • Wish John well. At least he and his family won't have to worry financially for the rest of their lives.

Appreciate everything he did and the fact that he tried hard to come back from an injury he never asked for but it was the right thing to do. It was time.

John at least can look back on the "Blackout Game," his win in the ALDS and his hot stretch during mid season 2010 as the Sox went 25-5 and shot into first place at the All Star Break...there's a lot of guys who don't even have that many good memories.
