South Side Stories will capture the beauty and richness that is the South side of Chicago. Steeped in history and culture, the South side teems with stories seldom or never told -- from human interest stories of South side neighbors and neighborhoods, to narratives about the events and activities that give the South side its flavor.
Barbara Kensey is a creative spirit, a born communicator with a gift for creating calm in the midst of any storm. A world traveler whose heart leaps whenever her feet touch down on foreign soil, she has an undying interest in other cultures, and a deep desire to write about them to share with others.
This writer at heart whose work has been published in numerous national publications built Kensey & Kensey Communications from a love of writing and communicating. As much as she loves travel she loves her hometown, the City of Chicago. That love led her to publish the city’s first-ever comprehensive resource and visitors guide to Black Chicago culture, history and education to spur tourism and economic development in the African American community.
She is also included in the anthologies Chicago Portraits and Whitewalls, a journal of language & art and has been produced on-stage to critical acclaim. Kensey is a charter member and former executive vice president of the Black Public Relations Society (BPRS) and recipient of awards including an Enduring Partner Award from the University of Chicago, The Girls Rule the World Award from Chicago Defender Charities, a Phenomenal Woman Award from Today’s Black Woman Expo and a Merit Award from the Publicity Club of Chicago.
She currently serves on the Community Advisory Board for the University of Chicago’s Health Initiative. Kensey is an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ where she sings in the choir and the mother of one adult son, Steven.
