Are you surprised that I would choose a place South of I-80 for today's Best of Chicagoland series? When people ask me what Frankfort is like, I ask them if they have ever seen Gilmore Girls and remember the fictitious Connecticut town of Stars Hollow, and tell them that Frankfort is the midwest version of Stars Hollow.
I know I know, you are probably saying, yeah I am NOT driving that far south to a suburb. I am not kidding, Frankfort is not like your typical suburb. It is definitely worth the drive and offers a day or two's worth of fun things to see and do.
Frankfort is suburb South of I-80 that boasts awesome businesses (Mariano's need I say more?) wonderful schools, and great neighborhoods, but the highlight of this place is the Downtown Historic District.
The reason Frankfort is so similar to Stars Hollow is the constant stream of things to do and activities in which to participate. So far this summer, we have attended the Sunday Summer concert series, the Art Festival, Bluegrass Music night at Downhome Guitars, the Fishing Derby, the Frankfort Country Market, and Frankfort's Cruisin' Nights.
While there are plenty of scheduled activities by the village or local park district, there are other awesome things to do around town like awesome shopping (boutiques, music shops, and antiques) fabulous restaurants (La Dolce Vita, Smokey Barque, Francesca's) and the Kidsworks Children's Museum. The kids' personal favorite is Fort Frankfort and Splash Park. This is a great way to cool off on those hot summer days.
While there is plenty to do all around Frankfort every day, the most exciting event is Frankfort Fall Fest. This is a three day festival in the Downtown area of Frankfort with hundreds of handmade crafts, live music, a parade, awesome food, and plenty of rides for the kids. In fact it has been ranked as the NUMBER 1 Illinois Festival. This year's Frankfort Fest will be August 31 through September 2.
Come and visit the REAL LIFE Stars Hollow and make the drive South of I-80. For more information about activities or events in Frankfort visit:
