I have been given the privilege of joining the fledgling group of organizers of the Rogers Park Food Co-op. If you care about the choices and quality of the food you eat, then please join us and get the word out to your friends and family.
The seed idea for a food co-op started in December, 2012 and much work has been done already. The kickoff date for the opening of the co-op is December, 2014. In order to achieve this, we are looking for 300 owners to purchase shares in the co-op in the amount of $250 per household. This will enable you to voice your opinion on what is sold in the store, where the store will be located, how the store operates and how the store contributes to the community.
Did you know that less than 5% of the food we buy is produced in Illinois? Because of that, Central Illinois loses $5 billion per year from its regional economy. Experts estimate that we have the capacity to produce at least 40% of our food right here in our state. If we bought just 15% of our food locally, we could generate $639 million of new income annually.
Based on similar food cooperatives, the RPCo-op will have 6,000 square feet of retail space, along with 2,000 to 3,000 square feet of office, storage and community space. There will also be a teaching kitchen and a community meeting space. A feasibility study will be launched to determine the best location for success; in an under-served location, near public transit, bike access and some parking.
Please come join us. We will have a presence at the Glenwood Farmer's Market all summer. Feel free to contact the organizing committee for much more information about co-ops and with questions at email@example.com. We can make this happen together!
