Social Media Savvy: Can You Really keep it Real Online?

By Shemeka Michelle

“I hate myself I tell ya! I really don’t like who I am. So I’ll take to social media and create a great big scam. I’ll fuel my pages with lies; mix deceit and then I’ll bake it. ‘Cause I’ve always been taught to disguise and fake it ‘til I make it!”

As I scroll Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc, I’ve noticed time and time again that social media allows an avenue for one to REcreate themselves. I recently went through a divorce and a lot of the evidence that my attorney used in my favor, came right from my ex-husband’s Instagram page. What an idiot!! He portrayed an unrealistic lavish lifestyle that got him served with an alimony and child support payment of almost $8,000.00 per month. Now THAT was social media savvy! Talk about karma biting you in the ass! Prior to the divorce, I hated his constant need for public approval. However, after the judge gave her ruling, I thought to myself post on playa!

So, can you really keep it real online? Absolutely! I truly believe that whether good or bad the REAL you will always show in your post. Genuine people will come across as genuine! If someone is an egotistical asshole, they can’t help but talk about themselves and all of their material possessions. They will rarely post anything of substance because keeping it real for them is keeping it extremely surface at best. Little Miss Backshots will always turn one way towards the camera because she’s dying for attention. She will post anything and just hope you like it! Mr. Soapbox will always hit you with post about his newest political stance and Susie Homemaker will try her best to interest you. However, most people will continue to overlook her just as they always have because it’s obvious that she doesn’t know who she is outside of her husband and kids!

Social media is not the evil monster some portray it to be but you MUST have social media savvy in order not to fall victim. The problem is that most people don’t know how to be authentic. As much as people would like for us to believe that they aren’t controlled by the opinion of people, most are too afraid to reveal their true selves out of fear of being judged. Keeping it real is a choice and that choice should be made whether online or not!

About Shemeka Michelle: "I was that chick. Gave it all up, all of it. I put all my eggs in one basket. Didn’t have a plan B ‘cause I believed in plan A. Then one day, all of it came to an end. All I could do was take it. I’m a survivor with 3 kids I HAD to make it! So instead of dying from pain and hiding in shame, I’ve decided to get NAKED." www.nakedgirlzblog.com
