ThankFUL Chick…Putting the THANKS back into THANKSGIVING

By Dawniel Patterson Winningham

I will be the first to admit, when you say Thanksgiving I immediately have thoughts of turkey, my Big Mama’s dressing and Giblet Gravy, the best cakes and pies ever, and a spread of sides so deep that you’ll need two plates.

This year, however, I have different plans. This year I am revisiting the TRUE meaning of Thanksgiving and I invite you to come along with me.

With today’s success oriented society, we are often so focused on the next car, the next biggest house, or even the next designer outfit that we don’t stop to truly GIVE THANKS for what we already have.

Oprah is quoted as saying “Be thankful for what you have, you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have you will never have enough.” How true. There will ALWAYS be something that we don’t have, but there are some things that we HAVE that are invaluable. Below are some tips on REFOCUSING on what we already have for the month of November. Chances are if we can get the focus right in November, it will spread to our spirit for the rest of the year as well!

TIPS on being a THANKFUL CHICK:

  1. Make time to RELAX and REFLECT – Be deliberate about putting time to the side to relax, clear your mind and think about all of the blessings that you have had bestowed upon you.  A 2003 study suggest that people who count their blessings live longer.

  2. Be RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW – Sometimes in our business to PLAN for the future we don’t ENJOY the present. Take some time daily to enjoy that warm bowl of chilli on a cold day, or to enjoy the sound of your children laughing in the next room. NOTHING last forever including this life –so ENJOY IT!

  3. Lean on LAUGHTER – No matter how bad things seem there is always a lighter side. Don’t spend as much time worrying and frowning, make sure that you spend just as much time laughing and realizing that you are not as bad as it COULD BE.  Do your best to NOT take life so seriously. GOD really does have a sense of humor if you think about it.

  4. Be THANKFUL DAILY – keep a journal to write five things daily that you are grateful for. Try your best NOT to repeat day after day; this will REALLY make you dig deep and reflect on all of the people, places, and things that you are blessed to have in your life.

  5. Take some TIME away – Regardless of how much you love something or someone, time away truly does make the love EVEN stronger.  Take a BREAK and trust that when you return you will appreciate whatever or whomever you took a break from even more.

  6. Practice RANDOM acts of KINDNESS – Regardless of how bad you THINK you have it, if you are reading this, trust someone else has it even worse than you. Look around you and find a way to give back whether with finances or with your time and energy. It always puts things into perspective for me and makes me even more thankful for what I have.

  7. Be POSITIVE, SPEAK POSITIVITY – Thankfulness is not only a state of mind, it is also what you SAY about your situation. Try responding every time someone ask about your well-being, and know that you are thankful, blessed, and that today is a GREAT DAY! This life is what YOU make it and what you make it often starts with the words you say about YOURSELF and YOUR LIFE!

  8. INVOLVE your FAMILY – Encourage your family and those around you to focus on being THANKFUL this holiday season. Slow down and remind them for the month of November that EVERYTHING in LIFE is a BLESSING.

  9. Say PRAYERS of THANKSGIVING – Regardless of your religion remember to GIVE THANKS for those things that you have received.
