REALLY?!?

By Yanni Brown

I was recently in a car accident, actually May 7th, 2013. I can honestly say that I didn’t have that life flashed before my very eyes moment. What I did have was a “REALLY GOD?!?!” moment. I was hit by a car. Thankfully nothing was broken, but I have muscle, tissue and nerve damage. I know what you are thinking because I was thinking it too. That’s enough!

Believe it or not my blog today is not about the accident itself but the journey through physical therapy to healing. Learning about the body and how everything is connected has been fascinating. I relate everything to life and life’s experiences so why wouldn’t I apply what I’m learning here?

When your muscles are stiff they affect other muscles as they compensate in other areas to make other muscles stronger or weaker. Yep, I related this to hurt people hurting people! Not because they want to but because they are simply compensating for something that's missing, neglected or deprived.

Everything takes time when it comes to healing, because you can’t heal one area without working on or strengthening another. When my therapist first told me that I heard it but, I still wanted a speedy recovery because in my mind I have things to do, people to see and places to go. I interpreted as so: Healing takes time & WE cannot rush through the process. Healing from an injury, heart break, and a love lost, love found, building a brand, starting a business... You get the message.

I have the pleasure of being in physical therapy three times a week and until recently I was sporting a very unattractive black boot. While the therapy is much needed it cuts into my social savvy life and is killing my attempt to be a celebrity. The boot has made it awkward to be in crowded social settings and was difficult to hide. Needless to say my invitations to be out and about, flirty and free has come to a screeching halt. Flip side to that is people treat you different. This is and has been one of those experiences that lets you know who genuinely cares about you and who likes you because you can DO something for them. I’m happy to say that I am now able to wear flat shoes, gym shoes/tennis shoes, plus I keep a mean pedicure thanks to Shawneka Tillman owner of Ambitious Nails and Lip Bar.

What is this blog really about? It’s about how EVERYTHING is connected and sometimes because we get caught up in the hype of it all we are forced to sit down and observe the very things around us to see how they work together. Some will come along for the ride of it, the thrill of it and just because of what they can get out of it. Others will pull you, stretch you, break you and possibly take you out of your comfort zone just to see what you are really capable of. This very experience has been hard as hell, I see people for who they are and who they are not but I am becoming a better person for having been hit by a car and simply connecting that experience to other areas of my life.

People are like muscles, some are weaker than others while others are strong and willing to work with others in their weakness to become stronger. In all things, good, bad and ugly I’m learning that everything happens for a reason and is ultimately connected to something else. In that connection is something to be learned about self and others.

Really!?! What has your life experiences come to teach you?
