Why do we love 3-D so much more than those standard 2-dimensional films?
Well, because 3-D allows us to make the things we see appear to be so much more real and life-like. It’s as if we can touch, taste & feel everything we’re viewing.
And in a world of standard television programming with flat, two-dimensional characters, BET’s new series Being Mary Jane offers a 3rd dimension of tangibility rarely seen on the small screen.
The storylines are uncomfortably authentic. In fact, as you watch, you’ll secretly be wondering if you weren’t dimed out by your friends or secretly followed by Joey Greco for a few days.
The characters are very well-developed, too.
In fact, you’ll think you know them, work with them, had a glass of wine with them or even came across them in the mirror. Most important though, Being Mary Jane has this great way of affirming many of the contradictions of our humanity as totally normal and completely okay.
Yes, you can be assertive, direct and driven but still fold like a cheap tent when your significant other is concerned.
It’s totally possible to be involved with multiple people and expect exclusivity from each of them. You can definitely love your mother unequivocally but, still want her to stop calling you 21 times a day.
I know all of this because recently, I had the good fortune to view an early premier of the new series which featured the show’s stars, Gabrielle Union and Shaft himself, Richard Roundtree.
Right before we viewed the program, Gabrielle said that this project was their baby who they’d labored over for months and months and now, they were just hoping we’d “think it was cute.”
Well, Ms. Union, after viewing the show for myself, I can now confidently say “y’all make some really pretty babies.” LOL.
Being Mary Jane is scheduled to debut January 7, 2014, on BET.
