I was recently asked what does it take to succeed as an entrepreneur and if I thought that I had it in me. Considering the series of recent events that has occurred in my life I too wondered if I had it in me. After giving this question some serious thought, here’s what I came up with, so please feel free to add to the list as it pertains to you.
If you are going to succeed as an entrepreneur you are going to need the following:
PRAYER, PASSION, DETERMINATION, THICK SKIN, a KILLER SMILE and a PLAN!
Prayer keeps you connected, rooted and grounded to the source. The source is needed to lead you and guide you through the shifts of life. Prayer keeps you focused, calm and collected when life happens and trust me, LIFE WILL HAPPEN to you, through you, for you and even against you.
Passion makes you get up even when you don't want to! Passion makes IT worthwhile. Passion gives you purpose and meaning to it all. It’s the thing that wakes you up every day to DO what you love.
Determination provides you with tenacity, patience and perseverance when nothing else makes sense. Determination sees the prize at the end of the race, the light at the end of the tunnel and the drive that’s needed to get you there. Determination will make a way out of no way and do a lot with a little.
Thick Skin is a must-have as an entrepreneur and it means just what it says.
Please understand that not everyone will like you, your plan or your vision. It is their job as a hater to prevent you from doing the very thing that is in you to do! They will talk about you, sabotage you, befriend you and even steal your ideas.
Unfortunately we cannot take it personally when haters are doing their job! Our job is to grow an extra layer of skin and keep it moving because we have a job to do as well. It is not our job to feed into the drama, the naysayers, backbiters or even the drama kings and queens who love to gossip about what you are and "AIN'T doing" (psst...grammatically incorrect on purpose). People will talk about you! Let them talk; stay focused on what it is that you are purposed to do. Reality check!!! If you are minding your business you don’t have time to mind someone else's business.
My mother taught me early in life to kill people with kindness and piss them off with a KILLER SMILE.
Then I picked up a saying while in fourth grade from my teacher; it simply says “Don’t go away mad… just go away!” In other words, you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. A smile goes a long way in the process of needing something and I believe that you can get further with a smile than you can with a frown. So I SMILE and even Kirk Franklin says it…”You Look So Much Better When You Smile”
Last but certainly not least is a PLAN of action! Create a plan that works for you in the long run. You can always revise, make adjustments as needed and implement new ideas. A plan helps you to visually see where your business is going or where it needs to go.
Plan your work and then work you plan like your life depended on it!
