With many schools starting up soon, it seems like summer is coming to an abrupt end but, no worries, there's still a lot of summer left (officially through September 21). Here are just a few of the many events on tap for the weekend.
BEST OF THE FESTS
Northhalsted Market Days Festival
The 38th annual Northalsted Market Days® celebrates life and the community in Chicago’s historic Boystown/Lakeview district. Saturday, August 10 - Sunday, August 11 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The half-mile-long festival features all-day lineups of live music on five stages, 200+ unique vendors, arts, crafts, food and drink, and more. Large crowds and street closures adjacent to the event will be in place. No large bags/backpacks allowed; all bags will be inspected prior to entry. No coolers or outside beverages will be permitted.
Chicago Hot Dog Fest
Take a bite out of Chicago history at the seventh annual Chicago Hot Dog Fest, presented by the Chicago History Museum. The Chicago-style hot dog is a quintessential part of Chicago’s storied history and you can get bites from 17 vendors along with music and family activities from 11 am to 8 p.m. today at the corner of Stockton and LaSalle Dr --just steps away from the Chicago History Museum.
Retro on Roscoe Festival
Retro on Roscoe celebrates Chicago’s top talent and entertainment on three main stages plus artisans, antique vendors, and cool merchants is in its final day today (August 11) at Leavitt and Roscoe (1:00 t0 10:00 pm). In addition there's treats from local restaurants and Retro’s Antique Car Show featuring over 50 antique, classic and muscle cars.
Enjoy soaring stunt-kite performances set to music by members of the Chicago Fire Kite Team and members of the Kite Society of Wisconsin & Illinois. kite workshops and more at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Free; regular parking fees apply. 1000 Lake Cook Rd, Glencoe.
THE ARLINGTON MILLION
When: Arlington Million Saturday, August 10 Gates Open @ 10:30am, First Race 12:15pm
Tickets: VIP Tickets $50 & Up/General Admission $30 Adult/$6 Youth
Where: Arlington, 2200 West Euclid Ave., Arlington Heights.
BACK TO SCHOOL
The annual Bud Billiken Parade steps off at 10 a.m. today (August 10) in the Bronzeville community. The parade route begins at King Drive at Oakwood Blvd. and proceeds south to end in Washington Park, where the “It Takes a Village” family fair will run until 4 p.m.
Comedian and West Side native Lil Ren Howery will serve as Grand Marshal for this year’s parade, featuring the theme “90 Years of Legacy”. Drill, dance and cheerleading teams from across the country will join marching bands along the route.
