Taste of Chicago: What's New for 2015

The Taste of Chicago is shaking things up this year by offering a broad range of food and entertainment experiences for all tastes.

At yesterday's press preview at Alpana Singh's Boarding House restaurant, an enthusiastic Mayor Emanuel praised the city's food scene by calling Chicago the Culinary Capital of the World.

This year's Taste will be showcasing Chicago's emerging presence as a world-class food destination with an exciting line-up of chefs, restaurants and cooking demos.

The Celebrity Chef du Jour program is kicking things up another notch for 2015 by spotlighting Chicago's impressive stable of James Beard nominated and winning chefs.

The celebrity chefs will be preparing sit-down, three-course meals served in an air-conditioned and decorated dining pavilion for only $45 per person.

Tickets, required for the gourmet dinners, go on sale at the Taste website at 10 a.m. Friday, May 29.  The tickets, which are expected to go fast, will be limited to four per order.

Here is the line-up:

  • Wednesday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m. Chef Tanya Baker of The Boarding House, James Beard Award nominee with Proprietor Alpana Singh.
  • Thursday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m. Chef Thomas Lents of Sixteen, James Beard Award semifinalist.
  • Friday, July 10 at 6:30 p.m. Chef Giuseppe Tentori of GT Fish & Oyster, James Beard Award semifinalist with Co-Founders Kevin Boehm and Rob Katz, Boka Restaurant Group, James Beard Award semifinalists.
  • Saturday, July 11 at 6:30 p.m. Jimmy Bannos, Jr. of The Purple Pig, James Beard Award winner.
  • Sunday, July 12 at 5 p.m. Chef Phillip Foss,El Ideas, James Beard Award semifinalist.

A mix of new cuisines and neighborhoods will be represented at what's been called "the world's largest food festival."

A total of 60 restaurants including 19 newcomers join the mix of five-day restaurants, pop-ups and the ever expanding line-up of Chicago’s popular food trucks with selections including Jack's Fork in the Road and Yum Dum.

Old favorites including Robinson's No. 1 Ribs (225 S. Canal St.) and Eli's Cheesecake are back for 2015 but, sadly Original Rainbow Cone, a longtime Taste vendor will be MIA.

Other new restaurants and food trucks coming to Taste 2015 are: Bruges Brothers, Burger Bar Chicago, The Crave Bar, Dia De Los Tamales, Dinky Donuts, Inc., DönerMen, Emerald Isle, Farmer's Fridge, Haire’s Gulf Shrimp, La Bomba Restaurant, La Cocinita, La Mexicana, Luke’s Lobster, Miller's Pub, Old Crow Smokehouse, Puffs of Doom, and Sono Wood Fired.

The 35th Annual Taste of Chicago runs July 8 through July 12 in Grant Park. Hours are 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Wednesday–Friday, and 10 a.m.–9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

As always, admission to Taste is free.

All vendors will offer signature items, as well as the popular “Taste Of” portions priced at $2.50.

Tickets for food and beverages can be purchased in strips of 12 tickets for $8.50.
