TILT!, the highly anticipated “thrill ride” atop 360 CHICAGO (formerly John Hancock Observatory) has just announced that it is up and running and will officially open to the public on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 9 a.m.
Originally scheduled to open in early April, TILT! adds a new angle from which to view the city. TILT! is located along the southern exposure of the building--allowing guests to experience the skyline and ground views of the Mag Mile and beyond.
If you’ve already experienced the view from the Willis Tower’s glass enclosed boxlike “Ledge” that extends from the tower 1,353 feet above the ground—and are looking for a new thrill—this one’s for you.
TILT!' is an enclosed glass structure made of steel with a moveable platform that holds up to eight visitors per cycle. Once guests are secured inside, the platform slowly tilts outward to about a 30 degree angle, from which you can look down below—from one thousand feet above The Magnificent Mile®.
Even though the ride lasts less than a minute, those with vertigo may still want to watch from inside the observatory.
TILT! was developed by Thornton Tomasett—an award-winning engineering firm known for their projects throughout the world.
Riders of Chicago’s newest thrill ride can be reassured that, although scary, the ride will be a safe one as the group behind the ride is the highly respected and experienced Paris-based Montparnasse 56 Group,
Prior to the TILT! Montparnasse 56 developed the Observation Deck at Montparnasse Tower in Paris, France and the Berliner Fersehturm/TV Tower in Berlin, Germany.
The initial cost to ride TILT! will be an introductory rate of $5 per person, plus the price of general admission to the observatory. Special group rates are available with reservations made 72 hours in advance, based on availability. TILT! tickets can be purchased in person now at the 360 CHICAGO ticketing desk and will soon be available online.
