The 34th Annual Taste of Chicago returns to Grant Park July 9-13 with a stellar line-up including kick off band AWOLNATION who will rock the Petrillo Music Shell on Wednesday, July 9. The dynamic electronic rock band was formed and fronted by Aaron Bruno, formerly of Under the Influence of Giants, Hometown Hero and Insurgence. The alternative rock band Saints of Valory from Austin, Texas, fronted by lead singer and bass guitarist Gavin Jasper, will open for AWOLNATION.
Day two (Thursday, July 10) will feature, "Girl, this is crazy... let me tell you," Janelle Monáe, songwriter, performer, producer and “avant-garde funkstress” on stage at the Petrillo Music Shell. Monáe will present a collection inspired by her life experiences just as the powerful women in her life were inspiration for her first single “Q.U.E.E.N” and continue to be sparked by her 2013 album The Electric Lady.
Hailed by the New York Times as “the next Hendrix,” Gary Clark Jr. will bring his soulful sounds alive when he opens for Monáe on Thursday.
The Grammy® Award-winning root music trio, Nickel Creek, celebrating 25 years as a group, returns to the stage after a seven-year hiatus when they perform for Taste-goers on Friday, July 11. With their new album, A Dotted Line, the musical strengths of violinist Sara Watkins, mandolinist Chris Thile and guitarist Sean Watkins foresees an exciting future for this trio.
Opening for Nickel Creek is Oklahoma native Parker Millsap who recently performed at South-by-Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas where he was the talk of the festival. Expect this 21-year-old singer/songwriter to hit it out of the park with the fire-and-brimstone fervor of a preacher.
Also on July 11, twelve-time Grammy® Award-winner, the legendary Emmylou Harris will command the Petrillo stage. Just off her 2014 award-winning collaboration, ‘Old Yellow Moon’ with Rodney Crowell, Harris is sure to deliver some special moments.
Chicago’s very own, Jeff Tweedy comes to the "Shell" on Saturday, July 12 with his brand of contemporary rock. Best known as the founder and leader of Wilco, Tweedy will showcase his talent as a songwriter pulling from a 400-plus collection of songs. Fans will also get to see his magic on the guitar, along with his charismatic stage presence and off-beat sense of humor. Additional artists will be announced at a later date.
Headlining the Petrillo stage on Sunday, July 13, Aloe Blacc brings his mega hit “Wake Me Up” and “The Man” from his recent album, Lift Your Spirit. “Wake Me Up” to the audience. Starting as a rapper while pushing further into folk, soul and pop fusion with incisive lyrics, Blacc has proved himself as an adventurous singer/songwriter.
Reggae superstars, the Wailers, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of their Legends album featuring their greatest hits will open for Blacc. Best known for their collaboration with Bob Marley, the Wailers have performed their Jamaican reggae for an estimated 24 million people across the globe and are considered the greatest living exponents of that tradition.
