Preparation continues at a feverish pitch at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest with the clock ticking on the BMW Championship scheduled to tee up September 9th through September 15th. The prestigious BMW Championship is bringing some of the biggest names in golf and an expected 125,000 plus spectators to an area that legend claims is the birthplace of Chicagoland golf yet hasn't seen a tournament of this stature in 40 years.
The BMW Championship is the third of four FedEx Cup playoff events on the PGA Tour schedule. This year's championship features 70 of the top players from the PGA Tour competing for the $8 million purse--with local residents pinning their hopes on hometown favorite and Conway Farms member Luke Donald. He has his competition cut out for him with Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Rory Mcllroy--just a few of the big names sure to give him a run for the money.
Although the BMW Championship runs only five days, the preparation is a different story--starting more than a year in advance. First there's the business end of things which is big. Then there's the physical set up which at Conway started in early June, three months before the tournament.
Things are shaping up on the course as well they should be with less than two weeks to go until the Championship. The skyboxes lining the 18th hole are in place with finishing touches being installed; the bleachers are being set up along holes 1, 8, 10, 13, 14 and 17. In addition concession stands and hospitality tents (some with price tags nearing $170,000) are under construction along with a nearly completed 6,500-square-foot merchandise pavilion. Take a look at the gallery below to see what it takes to ready a club for a big-time tournament.
Tickets for the event are $40 a day on September 12, 13, 14 and 15 with any day fairway tickets and parking passes already sold out. If you just want to see the course and the players and watch the rest of the tournament on television, the $10 practice sessions on September 9, 10 and 11 are the way to go.
