Take me out to the ball game, take me out with the crowd, buy me some edamame and gluten-free beer and I don't care...if I ever come back.
Healthy food at the ballpark used to be an oxymoron, but now there's as much competition off-field for exotic and healthful food as on-field for a winning team. And even through ticket prices keep going up, you can easily spend even more on food once you're inside the park.
Fortunately Chicago has not yet gone the route of the Left Coast with the fresh Dungeness crab sandwiches at San Francisco or the to die for "Ichiroll" and tasty yakisoba washed down with a glass of sake, in Seattle. Chicago, however, is straying from their beloved artery clogging, heart attack menu of the past. As each season commences they are adding more healthy options while taking away our high-fructose corn syrup, our flavor-filled MSG, our preservatives and all of those beautiful artificial colors (just don't take away our Cubbie blue).
So what's on the menu for 2013, you ask?
The Chicago Cubs and Levy Restaurants announced today that they will be introducing several new food offerings at Wrigley Field for 2013. The good news is that you should still be able to find your old favorites and then some. Popular existing food partners such as Vienna Beef Hot Dogs and D’Agostino’s Pizza are returning to the ballpark and Qdoba Mexican Grill will once again be serving chips and queso at the Qdoba Mexican Grill Queso Cart.
New to Wrigley this year are corporate partners Dippin’ Dots Ice Cream and Uncle Dougie’s Sauces, Marinades and Bloody Mary Mixes.
Dippin’ Dots will serve its ice cream including Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream as well as Rainbow Ice from two carts on the terrace reserved concourse ramp along the left field line.
Chicago-based Uncle Dougie’s, who makes natural, gluten-free, small-batch products with no high-fructose corn syrup, MSG or preservatives, becomes the Official Barbeque Sauce and Official Bloody Mary Mix of the Chicago Cubs. Twelve condiment dispensers will carry the barbeque sauce throughout the ballpark. Their Bloody Mary Mix and drinks will be available at drink carts throughout the park and in the United Club.
Other new offerings include:
The High Plains Bison cart, located on the right field main concourse, will be featuring a Bison Bratwurst with sauerkraut or grilled onions, a Bison Italian Sausage with sautéed peppers and marinara, and a Footlong Bison Hot Dog with various toppings.
Vegetarian offerings will include Levy Restaurants’ new Veggie Hot Dogs, piled high with your favorite toppings and a Veggie Chopped Salad. These new options join the Veggie Burger, Fresh Fruta Cup and Veggie Cups.
Other newbies include Pretzel Sandwiches, such as the Ham & Swiss with house-made mustard butter; Roast Beef & Cheddar with arugula, tomatoes and horseradish mayonnaise; Turkey & Swiss with romaine, tomatoes and dijonnaise; or Vegetable with cucumbers, sun-dried tomato pesto, romaine, tomatoes, mint, edamame and hummus. The “Sheffield Dip,” a new French dip-style Italian Beef Sandwich made with melted cheese and served with savory au jus dipping sauce, will be featured in Sheffield Grill, located on the right field main concourse.
More options include Italian Beef Nachos with melted cheese and savory au jus topped with spicy giardinera; a “Chicago Chop” Footlong Hot Dog topped with chopped Chicago-style fixings; Chicken and Waffle Stix served with Maple Bacon Dippin’ Sauce; and Northside Taters tossed with special sauces or shakes, such as hot sauce, barbecue, ranch and more.
