Well, it's the long Memorial Day weekend and it's travel baseball season. So you know what that means? Momma's going nowhere. I doubt baseball concession stands count as small businesses (though they do support your local parks, so pick up a candy bar or cotton candy), so we're going on a virtual vacation to the lake.
It's always fabulous when a family member has a lake house, even better when it's your sisters! Since it's a bit of a haul to get there, I'm always surprised to hear so many people say they've been to the Hayward, Wisconsin area. If you haven't been to this area, take a drive- there's plenty to do even after you've come off the lake.
First things first, after driving 7 hours, I need a cocktail. Red Schoolhouse Wines is the perfect place to kick off the weekend! Besides, what's cooler than having a drink in a 1870's school house?
Take advantage of warm weather with a glass of wine on their patio. Evening too chilly, that's ok, there's indoor seating too. Owner Sharon Paine will make you feel like a long lost friend before you've finished your first cocktail. You won't feel left out if you're not a wine drinker, they have plenty of craft beers and cocktails available too.
Of course you're going to need more wine for the weekend, so pick up a bottle or two. You'll even find some great specialty bottles showcasing local cranberries. They also offer free wine-tastings, usually on Saturdays.
Whether you're starting your weekend with a glass of wine, relaxing with the girls for a patio lunch with cocktails (c'mon it's vacation- afternoon beverages are required!), or kicking off the day with a Bloody Mary- head to Red Schoolhouse Wines. Something tells me you'll visit more than once during your trip.
Where do you go to get away?
