The scene was the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, IL - the event was the inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open Championship...and it was a trip back in time for many who came out to watch former favorite LPGA players in the 50+ age group compete once again. And, it was awesome. England's golf royalty, Dame Laura Davies, came to play and proved what a great Dame she is by leaving the rest of the field in her wake and winning by 10 strokes. An absolutely awesome performance from one of the game's greats.
We were treated to great golf by Davies, Juli Inkster, and Trish Johnson, and it was a real treat to see players like Hollis Stacy, Helen Alfredsson, Liselotte Neumann, Tammie Green, Amy Alcott, Betsy King, Pat Bradley and Jan Stephenson just to name a few of the pros who used to thrill us on a weekly basis on the LPGA Tour. And how about JoAnne (Big Mama) Carner shooting her age in the first round - a 79 - not bad on a championship layout in a major tournament environment. Way to go Big Mama.
How cool to see some of the other greats who weren't in the field rooting on their pro pals - for instance, the one and only Nancy Lopez - Hall of Famer with bad knees and all was there and couldn't play for that reason but sat outside the ropes and cheered on the ladies as they came in today. A great scene when Helen Alfredsson came walking up the 18th fairway and spotted Lopez on the sidelines and blew her a kiss...very sweet reunion.
On the local level, it was really fun watching Conway Farms pro Jamie Fischer play and do quite well against some of the game's greats with a final score of +7 which placed her in a tie for 12th! Great showing home girl! Also on a local and personal level it was fun running into my good friend, LPGA Tour Pro and Chicago native Nicole Jeray and her Mom, Brigitte also there watching the action. Two of the nicest and most fun ladies you will ever have the pleasure to meet. Hope to see Nicole competing in one of the upcoming Sr. Women's Opens especially at next year's at Pine Needles, NC, where Nicole had one of her best LPGA tournaments ever!
The inaugural U.S. Sr. Women's Open Championship was a huge success for the fans and players - a memorable tournament and the memory of a lifetime for Laura Davies. Congratulations on a convincing victory to Dame Davies and to all the players who brought back lots of great memories of many years of watching and covering the LPGA Tour - I'm so glad we had this time together, once again!
