On a Friday night just days after our reigning WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne received her very first Olympic Gold Medal, she recorded her fourth 30-plus point game of the season, leading all scorers with 34. Delle Donne also set a new season high from the free throw line, going 14-for-14. In her last three home games against the Dream, Delle Donne has averaged 35.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Not bad for someone who must be a bit exhausted after spending the previous month in Rio competing on Team USA Basketball and helping the team earn their 6th straight Olympic Gold Medal. One would think that if her health holds up, this is just the first in a series of Olympic medals this superstar will earn over her, hopefully, very long career.
The Sky looked very good in this game besides the outstanding scoring prowess of Delle Donne, Cappie Pondexter looked rested and ready to chase down a WNBA title by scoring 17 points along with getting 6 rebounds & 5 assists. Bench player Cheyenne Parker had a monster of a game and tied her career high in field goals made with six and also recorded her 500th WNBA minute. She led all non-starters on both teams in scoring with 14 points. Parker was a true spark off the bench and re-energized the Sky with her strong play in the paint and disrupting the scoring of the Dream.
Tonight’s victory was the 100th of Sky Head Coach & General Manager Pokey Chatman’s career. Chatman is only the 13th coach in WNBA history to reach the milestone and is now the winningest coach in Sky history. Other milestones reached in Friday's game included Courtney Vandersloot tying Sylvia Fowles for third-most steals in Sky history (210) and the Sky set a season high for points in the third quarter with 31. A lot of landmarks in the game all leading to a key victory in the Sky's run for the playoffs.
At halftime on the TV broadcast Elena Delle Donne was interviewed and was sporting her brand new Olympic gold medal - literally just won a few days earlier. It looks good on her and it was well earned with her awe-inspiring USA teammates who really dominated in the Olympics tournament. One would think Elena was ready to keel over with exhaustion being on such a whirlwind of activity at the Olympic games, but our superstar went on to score 34 points in Friday's game - talk about awe-inspiring!
Next up for the Sky - a Sunday afternoon match-up in Dallas with the Wings and here's hoping the strong play the Chicago Sky displayed on Friday night carries over to Sunday and they continue their winning ways. GO SKY!!!
