Anyone who tries to tell me that having a superstar like Elena Delle Donne on your team doesn't make a difference is totally blind to what is supremely evident as was shown in tonight's game versus the New York Liberty at Allstate Arena. The Sky have been on a very bad path since Delle Donne went out nearly two months ago due to her recurrence of Lyme Disease and, lo and behold, who is back tonight after undergoing treatments in her home state of Delaware? Delle Donne may have played only 10 minutes in tonight's game but just having her there in uniform and having her play for 10 beautiful minutes and adding 10 points motivated this sometimes lackadaisical squad into playing like they did in the beginning of the season when they started out 5 and 1.
Six players for the Sky scored in double digits and Sylvia Fowles looked like the beast that we've come to know, love and expect. Allie Quigley also contributed greatly as did Tamera Young and Jamierra Faulkner and Piph the Prince. The final score of 87-74 was a double digit victory and this big win was huge in so many ways - having Delle Donne back being the highest priority. Head Coach Pokey Chatman has to be exhausted, hoarse, and, in the end, pleased to have her old team back shooting on nearly all cylinders. Throughout the game I heard her voice above the crowd, cajoling, calling out plays, running up the sidelines with the team during the game (if she had been wearing a uniform I think she would have jumped in the game and played-she was so into it tonight)....it was a total team effort from start to finish.
There is still much work to be done if the Chicago Sky are to make it into the playoffs, but tonight was step one in the right direction. I've missed covering the games the last few weeks due to health issues of my own and also the health of my beloved 4-legged family member, Barney, and I am happy to report we are both recovering slowly but surely, too. Like the Sky, we are taking steps in the right direction and I hope to be on the sidelines at Sunday's game covering my favorite WNBA team and hoping for another perfect 10! GO SKY (and a big welcome back to a Perfect 11 named Elena Delle Donne!)
