Sky Blue After Losing to Mystics (in more ways than one)

The Chicago Sky game today at the Washington Mystics started out in usual Chicago 2013 style with the Sky taking a commanding lead and making the Mystics look mystified. Up by 12 after the first quarter, the Sky utilized every member on the team and all 5 starters had scored. A frustrated Mystics Coach, Mike Thibault, even got called for a technical foul after letting his feelings be known about a foul call he felt should have been made...and wasn't. Not to be outdone, Sky Coach, Pokey Chatman, received a technical in the 2nd quarter basically for the same reason. This game was at first a rout which quickly turned into a bout...players crashing into each other, falling to the floor, and this game evolved into a real gut check.

The basket shrunk to the size of a golf hole for the Sky who suddenly couldn't make anything except free throws. Even with double digit scoring by Fowles, Delle Donne, Prince and Cash, the Sky fell under the spell of the Mystic's Currie, Latta, Meesseman(where did she come from???) who pumped in 14, 18 and 12 respectively. I've followed the women's collegiate game for decades and the WNBA pretty much since its inception, and I never heard of Emma Meesseman before but I know her now...turns out she's from Belgium and after today I wish she had stayed there!

Antacid moments of the game - 2nd quarter - Sylvia Fowles goes down in a heap and stays on the floor - popped my first Tums. Fears escalated until she returned after halftime and played very well so one can only hope her ankle injury wasn't aggravated once again. 3rd quarter - took a whole bottle of Tums when rookie sensation Elena Delle Donne went down and never returned. It was reported she suffered a concussion which isn't good news for the team, the All-Star game, and most importantly for Elena. Odds are she won't be able to play in this weekend's All-Star game but her health is much more important than any single basketball game. Take care Elena...there will be many more All-Star games to come...your well-being comes first!

The Sky tried valiantly to make a come-back after letting the game slip away, but came up short losing by 4 points. A tough loss, a tough injury, and a tough way to head into the All-Star break but we are not going to let this one loss spoil our sky high hopes for this season. Everyone gets a break, a well deserved one, and when the Sky get back to business, hopefully with a healthy Fowles and Delle Donne on the court, all will be well in Skytown and we'll get back to our winning ways! GO SKY!!!
