Chicago Sky Win Over Phoenix A Slam Dunk!

While no one on the Chicago Sky team actually dunked the basketball in today's big win over the Phoenix Mercury, they DID dunk the hopes of the Phoenix faithful by pouring in 102 points against the team that has been picked by nearly everyone to win the WNBA title this season. The Sky proved today that even though Phoenix acquired 6'8" collegiate superstar Brittney Griner, THEY acquired 6'5" superstar Elena Delle Donne who played like a veteran WNBA'er with stellar stats to back it up - 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocked shots and 2 assists. Also contributing in a big way was Epiphanny Prince who threw down 26 points deftly illustrating why it was such a smart move on the part of the Sky brass to sign her to a multi-year contract extension. Guard Courtney Vandersloot added to the scoring onslaught by contributing 14 points of her own and helping her team break the century mark when all those sweet baskets were totaled up.

For Brittney Griner's debut, a couple of dunks bouyed up a rather quiet crowd, but it didn't mean a thing when all was said and done other than rev up the crowd for a few moments. Her dunks may make the highlight reels on ESPN yet the real highlight was the final score with the Sky beating the Mercury by 22 points. Griner scored 17 points in her debut as she was pulled out early in the first half with 3 fouls. Her teammate, veteran Diana Taurasi,  led Phoenix with 18 points.  None of that matters - winning matters and the final score matters and the Chicago Sky may have just shown the rest of the WNBA who the REAL "one to watch" is from the collegiate draft this spring...#11 Elena Delle Donne.

The Sky's home opener is this Friday at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont - here's hoping all you Chicago sports fans make the trip and support this exciting team of hoopsters. They have talent , they have personality, they have coaching and they are - to quote American Idol's Randy Jackson - IN IT TO WIN IT.  Welcome to Chicago #11 Elena Delle Donne, we really do believe we got the best pick in the WNBA draft this year and we're SKY HIGH to have you in that Chicago uniform. Congrats Coach Pokey Chatman and the Chicago Sky on your dominating win today - let's hope the rest of the season is also a SLAM DUNK!
